We brought in VAR to get the call right on the field, and it ends up protecting the referees while doing its best to not get a call wrong. We have pretty clear video evidence of what happened here, we can understand the intent of that without asking the player. And yet we continue to rely on technicalities and traditions to protect the feelings of the officials instead of getting the calls right. This is the frustration around and within the modern game
