Unhappy Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola claims England midfielder Kalvin Phillips returned from the World Cup “not in the right condition to train”.

The £42million summer signing from Leeds, who played just 40 minutes in Qatar, had made just four substitute appearances this season because of a shoulder injury and was initially a doubt to even make Gareth Southgate’s squad.

  1. Pep: "Was Kalvin overweight? Let's just say that the only football that came home for England was in Kalvin's belly"

  2. People have said it’s an English gene among players (ignoring Milner, Walker, etc) but Guardiola also had issues with Toure and Aguero who he said were overweight. They were world class players; Phillips is far off the quality of a Yaya Toure. If he can’t at the very least maintain elite fitness that’s effectively his career dead at Man City.

  3. Pep is 100% correct in being honest about the weight thing. Was he meant to make up a lie? Kalvin is a professional athlete being paid a lot of money. Nice kid, but I have no sympathy.

  4. On this one I must say Pep is not being honest.. I’m of the view that he doesn’t like the boy at all.. you can’t have a player who is always out injured if not injured he is overweight.. I think Pep and his medical team doesn’t like the boy.. all these guys were training in the World Cup he played couple of games coming as a sub then boom he is overweight to a point he can’t even train? and not make bench while all other England players are fit and good to go ?
