    World Cup 2022: Iran strike late to break Welsh hearts

    Ten-man Wales suffered heartbreak as two goals deep in second-half stoppage time sealed a 2-0 victory for Iran to leave their World Cup knockout hopes hanging by a thread.

    Rouzbeh Cheshmi’s stunning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time broke Wales’ resistance after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had been shown a straight red card for racing off his line and fouling Mehdi Taremi in the 84th minute.

    Iran then added their second with practically the last kick of the game when Ramin Rezaeian finished off another rapid counter-attack with a cool finish over substitute goalkeeper Danny Ward.

    Wales were seeking a victory in order to boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages having come from behind to draw 1-1 with USA in their opening game, but they struggled to break Iran down, with Gareth Bale unable to inspire any more heroics.

    The result means Rob Page’s side will likely need to beat England in their final Group B game to have any hope of reaching the last 16 while Iran, much-improved from their 6-2 loss to Gareth Southgate’s side, have renewed hope of achieving the feat for the first time in their history.

      Why everyone seems surprised? Wales is a second tier European team at the very best. Their record is beating Belgium in QF of the Euros 2016. That's it, nothing more. No surprise Iran beat them honestly.

      As an Iranian fan, I felt bad for Welsh fans, players, and coaches. they were so polite and humble. They deserve to have better moments in the world cup.

      After the draw in the opening game against USMNT, Welsh fans expected that another miraculous run like the Euro 2016 was happened. After this game, Wales might go home empty handed and Iran will stun both Netherlands and Argentina if they reached the knockout stage.

      As an Iranian American I sincerely hope Wales beats England. Anything is possible in this world cup. Japan beat Germany. Saudi beat Argentina. Very strange and unpredictable world cup this is.

      To be honest the result of England v Iran gave the rest of the teams in that group a false sense of security when it came to playing Iran. The truth is that England achieved that scoreline under a very unique set of circumstances. I'm not suggesting that England would not have won, but rather the scoreline. Due to political events back in Iran as well as lack of support from a large section of their fans, Iranian players seemed demotivated, distracted and emotionally spent. Also, deciding not to sing to their national anthem in defiance to their government's actions it must have played on their minds regarding the consequences awaiting them once they return to Iran. And lets be clear here; Wales didn't play poorly. Iran had regained their composure, motivation, carried out their gameplan to perfection and ultimately their quality and experience showed. I personally have a lot of respect for the Welsh team and wish them all the best in their final match.

      So much respect for this guy. He was obviously sad about his team but he respected the opposition and gave them the credit they deserve. Klinsmann should take notes!
