  1. Rodri not there – that simple. Peps formation has always relied on a world class single pivot (Fernandinho then Rodri) who is both excellent at reading the game, defensively strong and incredibly athletic. This is because when in attack city's centre backs split to the wings and their fullbacks push forward overloading teams in midfield and providing wide overlaps allowing inverted wingers and wide midfielders to cut inside. Without a world class single pivot to cover the area usually covered by two centre backs this exposes city to counter attacks. This weakness prevents city's players overwhelming teams like before because they are always conscious of the space left behind them. The alternative pep has tried is to alter the formation to two central midfielders but this drastically reduces the efficacy of city's ability to overload the centre of the pitch and therefore continually recycle possession. With the centre backs split and one midfielder nominally remaining in the single pivot position the second central midfielder is no longer an attack minded forward playing with freedom. This explains Fodens drop in output because last season he was one of the attack minded free moving central midfield pair that could move and interchange and attack without as much concern for defence. Last season this was foden and either Bernardo Silva or Julian Alvarez because of de bruyne injury and Silva injury. This season the two midfielders are not both attacking and Silva and debryune back from injury so he is one of 3 players going for one position and when he does play he is often paired with kovacic as the more defensive or the two or he plays as the more defensive when paired with de bruyne or Silva. And his improved output in champions league is a direct result of the same – UCL teams tend to play less direct, physical counter attacks and so city are less concerned about their weaker defense. They were destroyed by sporting Lisbon who played direct fast counter attacks

  2. When the defense and midfield around you is injured and performing poorly and you are hardly given a break all season, you are likely to suffer massively.

  3. No youth player has had a less pressured introduction than Foden he got given junk minutes as a kid when City were 3-0 up pressure free. He's a system player that can't deal with adversity. Anyone who says otherwise is lying or in denial

  4. The problem with peps style of coaching, constantly rotating players, doesn't allow consistency. It worked when they had mahrez, Jesus, Sterling, and cancelo. All of which are world class, now having let them go put tremendous pressure is on foden who is still growing. Exhaustion affects everyone plus the mental aspect it's no mystery why he is lacking in form.
