In this video, I dive deep into 4 reasons why Manchester City are struggling really bad in their recent form, with 5 losses and 1 draw in their last 6 matches across all competitions. Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, have been one of the most dominant teams in world football over the past few years. But lately, they’ve hit a rough patch, and questions are being raised about why they’re not performing at their usual high standard. As one of the best managers of all time, Pep Guardiola is experiencing a tough time, and I’m here to break down the key reasons for their struggles.
1) Injuries in the Squad – A Major Setback
The first and most significant reason for Manchester City’s recent poor form is the sheer number of injuries affecting key players. From centre-backs to youth players, almost every position seems to be impacted, and it’s taking a toll on the team’s overall performance.
City has had several important players sidelined, which has caused a significant disruption in their rhythm and consistency. The injuries to central defenders, such as John Stones and Nathan Aké, have forced Guardiola to experiment with less experienced players at the back. The lack of a stable defense has led to defensive errors, and in some cases, even conceding goals in situations where City would normally have been solid.
Furthermore, the midfield injury crisis, with Rodri (who’s arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the world) missing games, has had a massive impact. Rodri is the player who usually links up play and breaks down opposition attacks, allowing Manchester City to control possession. Without him, they’ve lacked that control in the middle of the park, which has resulted in City being more vulnerable in transitions and counter-attacks. The inability to rotate in key positions due to injuries has only exacerbated this problem.
2) Lack of Leadership in the Team – A Void in the Dressing Room
In addition to the physical strain caused by injuries, Manchester City have also been suffering from a lack of leadership on the pitch. When you think about the influential leaders that City have had in recent years, players like Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and John Stones come to mind. These are players who can rally the team, inspire others, and make crucial decisions in key moments of matches. However, with multiple key leaders absent, the team has struggled to find that guiding voice in tough moments.
The absence of John Stones, in particular, has been felt. He’s one of the leaders at the back and a key figure in organizing the defense. Without him, the backline has looked disjointed, and there’s been no real commanding presence to steer the team through difficult spells in matches.
3) Dependence on Youth Players – Not Yet Ready to Deliver
The third reason behind Manchester City’s struggles is their increasing dependence on youth players, particularly players like Savinho. While it’s great that City has developed some exciting young talent, the reality is that these players are still very much in the developmental stages of their careers.
Savinho, who’s been given a chance to shine, has shown glimpses of his potential but hasn’t yet consistently delivered the performances needed at the top level. Young players can be unpredictable, and while some may rise to the occasion, others may struggle to handle the immense pressure of playing for a team as big as Manchester City.
4) Too Much Dependence on Erling Haaland – One-Man Army?
Finally, the over-reliance on Erling Haaland has become a major issue for Manchester City. While Haaland is undeniably one of the best strikers in world football, his performances have a massive impact on how well the team does. When Haaland has a bad day or is neutralized by the opposition, the entire team seems to struggle to create goals and break down defenses.
City’s style of play has always revolved around a fluid attacking system, where multiple players contribute to the goal tally. However, since Haaland’s arrival, the team has shifted to playing through him as their focal point. If he doesn’t score, there’s often a lack of alternative attacking options to turn to. This over-dependence on Haaland has led to City’s struggles when the Norwegian striker isn’t at his best.
