You said it in your opening line . He was a ( Good defender) never a great one. But like most goog English players the British media build them up and up saying they are world π class π . And then when he couldn't play against better teams or average teams in Europe say . The media and pundits except ( Roy Keane) kept making excuses for him .
Now a few years later they are starting to say things like he needs a Experienced player beside him taking to him to help him true the games ?? So he's been playing in Premier league for 6/7 years and was sold for Β£80 million a d isn't experienced..π€ come on ..

His problem is hunger, when United swooped in and took him away for 80 million, put him on 190k per week, his hunger left him, hence why he's so unfocused and unconcerned,, he's gonna earn enough money in 3 years to retire and never worry about money again. What does he care if United win anything or not?
He doesn't support them, his only allegiance to them is based on money, as long as he shows up, he gets paid and thats the minimum he has to do, just be there.
For 80 million, they'd pay him 190k per week for 6 years if they can get 1 or 2 good seasons. He knows this so why bother?

This issue isn't exclusive to him either, these stupid wages have killed player desire and drive.
In general, i refrain from criticising &/or supporting criticism of people & tend to cut folk a lot of slack as life can be a bitch + one cannot know what kind of shit another is going through, etc, etc, however, there are exceptions when i wholeheartedly feel criticism is earned & deserved….i.e individuals in positions of power & individuals paid outrageous sums for things of no real importance…..footballers are right up there in that case.
