japan, usa, canada and to a lesser extent morocco proved to me that in depth tactical works could be done at international stage. “obviously some managers policy are “let the best players win you the game”, deschamps, southgate, etc are in this camp.

England won't win anything until we have players that can run at AND beat opposition players
Italy were there for the taking, GS let them back into it with his terrible tactics, so the Pens shouldn't have even happened.
Spain were the best team in the semi's v Italy, it went to extra time then Pens, which affected & drained the Italians.
ENG had the better of France, if GS made great substitutions at the right time Eng would have won.
So Kane's Pen miss would not have ever mattered.
GS simply isn't good enough, no way near the elite level.
Watch where his career goes & what he wins after the cushy-big money ENG job.
I believe we have the 2nd best squad of players in Europe after France, so anything less than getting to the final (unless we play France before the final) will be a failure, but don't bank on it with Southgate, his coaching is championship level at best, see if he manages a top 10 premier team when he leaves England, no chance!! his clueless tactics cost us the Euros against Italy and we will waste another 18 months sticking with Southgate to lose again.

The main point is not how far England progressed, but how they played and almost always England tend to be disappointing – based on results, we're not an elite team, but based on the resources that go into the English game, we are potentially elite.
Be careful what you wish for:
Since 1966 until Gareth Southgate’s appointment, England’s record was a catalogue of abject failure, with a trail of catastrophic managerial appointments such as Kevin Keegan, Graham Taylor Fabio Capello etc.
England failed to even qualify for the world cup in 1974, 1978 and 1994 and failed to qualify for the Euros in 1972, 1976, 1984 and 2008.
There is also a catalogue of humiliation and embarrassment from going out of major tournaments at group stages to infamously losing to Iceland at the 2016 Euro’s.
In short, apart from the exceptions of a world cup semi-final in 1990, and a Euro’s semi-final in 1996, England have lurched from one crisis to the next for 50 years. Until now.
When Southgate took over in 2016 after the Iceland debacle, England were in the darkest of places yet somehow, he has turned the decades long malaise on its head when other more illustrious names couldn’t.
He’s made sure the country qualified for each subsequent World Cup and Euro’s with ease and has taken England on exciting runs to a world cup semi-final, Euro’s final and another roller coaster World Cup quarter final.
Perhaps most telling is that the likes of Alex Ferguson and Jurgen Klopp had far worse records than Southgate currently has when calculated on a comparable pro-rata basis vs time it takes to win a trophy, and they needed significantly more time than Southgate before they were even in a position to do so.
Gareth Southgate has emerged as a breath of fresh air and more importantly an unquestionable success when set against the deeply depressing landscape that England fans have had to live through for so long, and he deserves huge plaudits for delivering England out of being a third-rate football nation and a laughingstock, into a consistently competitive one in a relatively short space of time.
The least he deserves is to be fully supported as England head towards Euro 2024 which England are in with a genuine chance of winning.

Euros was a home tournament
I am sick of the English media of talking up players as being world class on the basis of a couple of performances .Look at two of the Argentina midfielders , De Paul and Mac Allister who were outstanding in the World Cup and gave every last ounce of effort .If these were English they wouldn’t even be in the squad . Give me these two any day over the likes of Foden and Grealish the current darlings of the media .
I'm not keen on having Southgate either but you cannot use his time at Boro to judge him. He managed at a time when we stopped spending decent coin and tried to get sort of unknown foreign cheaper players. The club was changing its outlook. He was sacked after taking us down but a win that night would of took us 2nd or 3rd. Like I say I don't really want him in charge but we can't use his time at Middlesbrough to judge. We could win the Euros but it won't be because of him if we do.
I would agree if England were truly good enough but are they really compared to Argentina, Brazil, France? I don't think they have that quality. So we don't have a divine right to win the while tournament. Win the whole tournament or label it a complete failure is unrealistic for England. They are very good but not quite at that level yet.

Relevant to this discussion, I would imagine Belgium would be regretting allowing Martinez to be the coach for so many tournaments. That is a country had missed its opportunities during a golden player period. It’s a warning to England not to be too safe.

This whole situation with Southgate should be the thing that drives both Eddie Howe and Graham Potter to success with their club sides; coaches have short career life spans in their premier league, but if they can win the odd trophy, that will put them in an excellent position to become next England coach. They are practically guaranteed the England job after Southgate. It’s almost like a new rivalry between Howe and Potter. Potter possibly has the edge as he’s in the champions and can show his talents at that highest level.
