It’s no surprise, but the constant messages of hate they receive are having an effect on them and their performance. The hate has gone through the roof since the start of the season.

95% of the messages I’ve seen are directed to Jonas and that ship has sailed. I don’t see much difference either compared to how the fans react when the men’s team do badly. For better or worse, football fans are very passionate, probably most than other sports. They honestly just need to grow thicker skin and own up to their mistakes because let’s be honest, you can’t blame 100% of it on Jonas

  2. Fans are always gonna criticize. Online, foord was and still is criticized endlessly but she showed up for this match with a fire and was the only reason why we posted atleast 1 goal.

Also, I never see criticism toward emily fox because foxy always puts in shifts even when she is running on fumes. Sometimes players have to grow a thicker skin. Abuse isn’t okay but like you have to bear it and brush it off to rise above.

With respect, and very understandably, I think Beth is feeling a little sorry for herself and her teammates here. However, the fact is that they (team+Jonas) have been below par for some time now, and are rightly being called out for it.

Criticism should never, ever be abusive, of course, but the passion that fuels people spending hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds every season to watch them play, is the same passion that drives fans to want better from and for the team.

In my view, Lia takes a bit more accountability for the way the game went: acknowledging that whilst we were on top for periods, we were also really poor in the key moments, and against top teams you will be punished more often than not.

Being pretty much out of the title race 4 games in and capitulation in a European game , when would be a good time to criticise?

  5. Why are people here conflating hate and criticism?

No, I’m not okay with players getting abuse and hate. People on social media are cruel and toxic cowards who tag players in disgusting hateful stuff. Beth has been getting a huge chunk of it regardless of her performances for some time now.

The argument that the men get it and just get on with it is plainly wrong. Loads of them have talked about the negative effect it has on them. I think Alvaro Morata spoke recently about panic attacks caused by fans abusing him.

  6. Jonas is getting a lot of stick (he not very inspiring imho). I can imagine the shit the ladies are getting in public and private messages through the socials.

We (Arsenal fans) can be absolute arseholes when any of our players have a dip in form. Meado has been getting a fair bit of stick.

The men get it bad too – think Xhaka in previous years, Martinilli last season

    Stay strong, ladies #COYG

It’s not hate. It’s a disappointment. I’m sorry but just like women’s football needs to come to grips with not just being a fun day out for the family. It needs to deal.with the fact that when you have fans who follow the team there will be criticism when it’s going badly.
You can’t want increased viewership, increased revenue and increased interest without dealing with increased scrutiny.

  8. Nobody deserves hate and most criticism should be levelled very narrowly: to the club & team management (ie Arsenal & Jonas). I really think it’s impossible and unfair to try to critique these players when they are only playing with the cards Jonas has dealt them. People are often saying something like “Jonas is only responsible for so much, the players need to take responsibility too” etc… However this ignores the nature of the management responsibility and affect on player performance in this context. Players can perform radically differently with different managers, because of all of the things in the team and playing context that the manager controls and can affect. The buck stops at Jonas (& club) and I’m very much looking forward to what these players can achieve when he is gone.

  9. If ANYBODY is sending hate to these amazing players, they need their heads checked, These amazing players don’t stop running, or giving 100%.

If you watch their matches (which we all should if we have the time/access) you will see their desire to make us fans happy week in week out,

I blame the system, that’s my criticism as a fan, not hate, but criticism, it’s no longer working, or teams just figure us out quicker than previous seasons, talent doesn’t take a drop this quickly, there must be a reason why we aren’t lethal like before!

Get behind the team, support them 100% during ALL games and let’s be proper Arsenal Fans <3 COYG <3

I agree with most of the points I’m reading here, but I don’t understand what she wants from us support wise. Yesterday there were 45k people who showed up and supported them. The club in general has 10 times the supporters any other club has. Yes, the team gets critisised after a game but there are honestly very few games where that isn’t 85% based on Jonas and tactics. But imo, critisism is based on us wanting them to do better? There are unfortunately always strange people that will actually send hate, and they should ignore them. But before every game, everyone is always supportive and we always want them to win.

I believe a major point that is playing into everyone’s frustration is the fact that the players themselves deeply believed this would be their season. Adding that to very frustrating games on a very tight schedule, allows the “fall” in beliefs and emotions to be much steeper than when they had less expectations for the season.

  11. Hate and criticism are not one in the same. The players should not ever be getting personally attacked (about their appearance, life off the field, family, etc etc etc) but criticism of performance is not hate. Beth, for example, cops a lot of ridiculous hate online about everything under the Sun. That should not be tolerated. But those clips going around right now of her getting beat to a ball as though she was running through cement + the one of her completely missing a ball she asked to receive? They’re being criticized and rightly so. Not everything is hate. Not everything is on Jonas, either. I think a lot of people would be surprised at the fact that if he left tomorrow, the performances likely wouldn’t improve all that much. The players are at fault too and that is worthy of (healthy) criticism.
