Daniel Childs reacts to Enzo Fernandez’s start to the season at Stamford Bridge and whether he is performing well enough to justify more minutes?

Massive thanks to great guys at Alloy Collectors for sending me their 1998 #CFC Retro Metal shirt. Easy to make, customise and display on desk or shelf. Really thoughtful collectibles and made by proper football fans.

  1. He contributes little, he is weak, slow, lacks balance and if he plays deeper he is a bigger liability. Who sees him improving? Only those who aren’t seeing reality. Don’t sell him too soon? He either sits or runs risk of another injury. Not a Prem player. Sell.

  2. I am eagerly waiting Enzo Fernandez ban by FIFA for racially abusing black french national team football players. Chelsea is better team without him. The dude is most underwhelming player at Chelsea. The club should seriously attempt to move him on. He has needlessly been given the captaincy, his corner kicks are poor, lacks mobility, doesn’t track runners don’t do any pressing, and his passing accuracy is awfully error prone and erratic. The dude is just a younger version of Jorginho.

  3. You all are finding things to complain about. Complaining is not a rational perspective all the time – sometimes its just being negative. Not every player on the pitch has to make superstar passes. What you want from Enzo is to be more selfish, show off, and make it about himself…because "that's the way he is marketed." That is antithetical to squad building and winning football. A lot of the 'superstar' roles that we bought Enzo for…has been taken up by Cole Palmer. Not Palmer's goals but the way he drifts into the open area, moves around, and make key passes was all the stuff the directors envisioned Enzo doing. No one expected Palmer to do the role. Now, Enzo is making sacrifices for the success of the team. Also, who else on the team can do the job that he's doing as disciplined and professional as Enzo currently? The only one is if Lavia in Caicedo's role and Caicedo in Enzo's role.

  4. I’ve been having exactly the same concerns about Enzo Fernandez and his low levels of performance this year. He loses the ball frequently and that has generated dangerous counter attacks from the opposition in many occasions. If that happens against the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal we’ll be toast. I’d rather see Romeo Lavia instead of Fernandez. He’s a much better passer and is also excellent off the ball, something Fernandez sorely lacks. I hope Lavia can start against Liverpool together with Caicedo in midfield. I think Chelsea will be much better with those two players.

  5. I think all this hate is coming from the lack of understanding of Enzo’s role and the difficulty of it. You expect him to have de bruyne levels of creation while also running around the entire field. His role is mainly ball retention and helping in possession. Last time we played without him we could barely progress up the field. He is also 3rd for chance creation for our team. This hate is just because of that first man city game and you ‘ve attached to the notion he sucks. So stupid

  6. Big up dan! Enzo fernandes price tag is the main reason why enzo gets a lot of hate. The fans expect a player with that price tag to adapt to a league where speed & quick thinking is key but that's where enzo let's the fanbase down the most. Enzo is more suitable in la liga or serie A.

  7. The idea that Enzo is one of the best players at Chelsea is ridiculous. He has a fair bit of talent but he's not delivering on it. Contrast with players like Fabregas or Lampard. Players that absolutely were top shelf midfielders. Is Enzo even close to where they were at 23? I wouldn't say so. I would argue he's miles away from that level.

Our expectation for Enzo when we bought him was Jorgi's passing, good vision, and a combative and aggressive disposition. In other words, he was thought to be a serious ball player who wouldn't be a complete liability defensively. He'd be the forward pivot player in a midfield duo that could actually hack it in the Prem.

The reality is that such a pivot struggles to function because Enzo just doesn't deliver enough defensively, which means the other pivot player is given an impossible job. Enzo is a bit too slow to really be where he needs to be at the time where he needs to be there, and he's too weak in the tackle to not be a bit of a target.

So something else has to be done to make it work, but if that's done then someone with a role further forward will get a more defensive role, and what does Enzo then offer to compensate? Frank would score 20 goals a season, Cesc would hit those scary accurate passes time and time again, but what can Enzo do? He's been at the club for nearly two years at this point and he hasn't improved much either. If anything, he's declined a bit.

But he could have improved. He could have worked on his tackling game. Kante was a monster and had less physicality than Enzo. He could've worked on his overall strength, putting on a bit of muscle, making it harder to just shove him off the ball or out of the way. He could have worked on timing and pattern recognition. He could've worked on making his passing game sharper. He could have but he did not.

And now consider how much work we have to put into defining Enzo's optimal role in midfield. Should not be tasked with pressing, should not be tasked with intensive runs on or off the ball, should not be tasked with marking players, shouldn't be relied on as a ball-winner, and probably shouldn't be given any task further forward than the middle third. Basically a midfielder that neither defends nor attacks, but he can make nice passes every once in a while. Billy Gilmour with an Argie passport, then?

Yeah, I know. Kind of harsh on young Billy G, isn't it?

  8. Am i the only one who thinks thats the enzo who is helping most in offensive part of our game hence we are seeing what cole is doing right now with free dom .coz enzo attracts players to his side and side change the ball 😂so that cole and rw are free to do most of the remaining part haha

  9. If Madueke passed the ball to him in the past couple of matches when he got close to the box, Enzo Fernandez would have scored goals. Check the highlights, it's crazy.

  10. I think for his price tag we expected a Palmer level player but that’s not his game. If you remember the servette games we desperately missed Enzo – someone that can connect defense to attack. He does a lot of work during games that’s not noticed bc he’s not a good shot, he doesn’t provide assists often, he’s not a destroyer like Caicedo. A lot of his game is just recycling the ball, controlling tempo, etc. I think he’s the type that makes you go “wow the team isn’t flowing today” when he’s not there

  11. Agreed – he's been pretty average, can't tackle, can't run, interceptions ain't great, set pieces are abysmal – not really sure what he does TBH
