Wayne Rooney faces three charges from the Football Association after being sent-off near the end of Plymouth Argyle’s 2-1 Championship win against Blackburn Rovers.

Rooney was dismissed by referee James Linington after Blackburn scored a controversial equaliser in the 86th minute. The Pilgrims’ boss reacted angrily after what appeared to be a trip on Ryan Hardie was missed by the match officials. The 38-year-old watched the final moments of the match from the players’ tunnel and saw Morgan Whittaker grab a last-gasp winning goal deep into added time.

Then, after the Blackburn players had left the pitch following the final whistle, Rooney went out to celebrate the victory – Argyle’s third in succession at home – with his players, while he received a hero’s reception from the Green Army in the stands.

A FA statement released at 4pm today read as follows: “Wayne Rooney has been charged following Plymouth Argyle’s match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday 5 October in the EFL championship.

“The manager’s conduct around the 87th minute was allegedly improper and/or used he used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official, which led to his dismissal.

“It’s further alleged that his conduct after being dismissed was improper and/or violent. It’s also alleged that by returning to the field of play after being dismissed his behaviour was improper. Wayne Rooney has until Tuesday 15 October to respond.”

As a result of his red card, Rooney was not allowed to talk to the media after Argyle beat Blackburn, with assistant head coach Pete Shuttleworth standing in for him.

Rooney did speak about the incident, though, at a Legends of Football event in central London last night, where Manchester United’s record goal scorer received an award.

He told TalkSPORT: “It’s my first time as manager receiving a red. Decisions happen on the pitch and I think looking back it’s a free-kick so the goal shouldn’t have stood.

“In the Championship you don’t have VAR. The officials missed it and your emotion kicks in. I’m a passionate person, we want to win. We worked extremely hard t win the game and to have that taken away by a mistake by the officials I felt was really harsh.”

“I reacted in a manner which I probably shouldn’t have and the red card was deserved from that point of view, but beyond that the fans were fantastic. It galvanised the stadium, the players and we kept pushing trying to get the winning goal.

“Me and the club secretary in the tunnel were celebrating (when Whittaker scored) and I broke his glasses! I think it was a deserved win, but sometimes it boils over a little bit and that’s the nature of football.”

  2. What even is Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle without Wayne Rooney? What are we supposed to call them now?

    This is unprecedented.

Didn’t he kick or throw a bottle and it made it’s way into the crowd? Apparently it was quite impressive.
