Didn’t they do this before back in the Cup Winners Cup days? I think I remember Cardiff having some European games back in’t day…

Would mean giving up the right to enter Europe through English competitions though doesn’t mention actually withdrawing from those competitions. Although Swans have historically qualified via England’s League Cup unlike the other Welsh clubs it’s not really on the cards at the moment and this would be incredible.

Have no idea how they’d fit in 2 extra competitions for the Welsh clubs into the schedules but the youth teams are mostly good enough in the Welsh League Cup apart from the select few fixtures against other efl clubs.

    The disrespect to Merthyr Town!

It was amusing last season that the final of the League Cup was Cardiff u21s, the Welsh side who played in the English league against TNS, the English side who play in the Welsh league and also the Scottish Challenge Cup.

Seems a bit pointless to me lots of extra games would be required? Feels like it would be more harmful than beneficial. Surely the prestige of qualifying for Europe is that you’re one of the best teams in your league, not a back door way like this too?

Am I being cynical or does this feel very convenient with Wrexham on the verge of reaching the championship… Welcome to Wrexham S5: Welcome to Europe 🤢

I think this should be decided by the Welsh league clubs. I think it disadvantages them but maybe they want the extra revenue from playing us, Cardiff, Wrexham…

  7. Problem is, how do you organise around this? I don’t really think either the EFL or the Prem, or even the lower leagues for Merthyr Tydfil, are open to rearranging games for yet another cup.

And that’s even if they were to drop out if the FA/carabao to not have to reorganise around those games, which they would have to because in no world are they accepting you just delaying their draw for a smaller cup, and would lead to whoever didn’t win the cup losing a lot of revenue, because I’m sorry but playing Airbus UK isn’t going to bring in a tenth of the revenue of even playing Accrington. And far less prize money is on the table as well.

I hate to say it, but this doesn’t sound like a good idea.

  8. There is actually already a precedent for this, Vaduz from Lichtenstein plays in the Swiss second division but they enter the Lichtenstein cup for European entry, they have qualified for Europe every single year

  9. Sure, let them but only if they play in the Welsh leagues too.

I would assume the Welsh clubs would veto this if possible.

  10. Should be forced to play in the Welsh league so

Can’t be playing in the English league getting the English revenue
Then wanting an easy way to qualify for Europe

Having your cake and eating it. All the benefits of the English league and sneaking into European competition at the same time? Bollocks. They should have to leave and be part of the Welsh league to have that benefit.
