The USMNT has some drama going on during the 2022 World Cup which led to Gio Reyna playing minimal minutes.
What happened between Berhalter and Reyna?
Let’s discuss.

Gregg Berhalter is not the only one to blame here but Ernie Stewart and the federation are driving this unprofessional culture in our USMNT! I’m very disappointed in USA Soccer and the leadership!!!!!!
Jimmy Conrad heath pierce agreed with GGG

It surprises me the Berhalter hasn’t called up Joel and Alan Sonora. They play in Argentina and have been part of the U-17 and U-20 squads
Ziyach can finish, Pullahammy is a bit overrated.
Lost all respect for crying Brian McBride after his snowflake meltdown about Zlatan comments. Never really gave much thought to Stewart.
If GGG was the france manager "hey kylian.. Ky my guyyy… your services are no longer required.." lmfaooo
I had to come back and leave a comment. I love this channel and 11 yanks so much but never have you guys been so far off. The crazy thing is people actually feel the same way. Bro the team voted 13 to 12 not to send him back home. Players were divided as to their feelings toward Gio. Charlie davies said it best. If you let a kid who huffs and puffs and and acts entitled play you are going to lose the locker room.
Could this post have been written by a comms team? Seems too formal for it to be a personal statement.
I am shocked that you have coaching experience and don’t understand how bad this was for the team. One player, with a gigantic ego, can ruin a team. You should know that. Also, it wasn’t just the coach. It was the entire team that noticed. As coaches, you know, you bend to one ego on a team, you lose the rest. Just shocked at your take on this.
Such hypocrisy. GGG tells everyone team matters stay on the team and then talks to a group of 100 people about team drama.
Honestly anyway you break this down points to Gregg being a total disgrace. From my opinion Gregg knew his comments would leak. Gregg isn't the brightest mind of all time but to assume he wasn't conscious that his comments were going to come out is a bit of a stretch. Especially when the Athletic basically had the story with similar opinions sourced (I would expect from folks in some way in federation or coaching staff). To me GGG realized he was under fire for the Reyna stuff and tried to establish a coherent narrative to caste him in a better light as he is debated staying on. With the out and defense of saying it was not supposed to leak and assuming that Gio wouldn't respond. Essentially covering his basis of defense.
The problem is he didn't think it through. For starters it's blatant his endgame, and second not enough noise to drown out the inconsistencies. No one viably should believe he didn't know his comments would be leaked.
THAT SAID if that isn't the case it's just damning. Ignorance of not knowing that the comments would be leaked is frankly not an excuse. You are the manager of one of the most media heavy int'l jobs in the world. If this is just a slip up the waterfall and or fallout shows he is demonstrably out of his depth. It also doesn't change that Morris was not good and shouldnt have started over Reyna. The same is true with his pick of Moore and Yedlin over Scally. Those were bad choices that DID NOT WORK which is the basis of judging his job.
In my estimation that isn't what happened. Gregg has seemed to fancy a belief in his political nuance on more than one occasion. He has lied to the public on internal matters in the past that have led to his version of events to appear as accurate. I think he expected his calculation to look earnest but Reyna's well said statement shows the cracks. Gio's version of event does seem the most logical explanation.
whatever way you break it its a sign (among many) this coach is unable to do the job. The nepotism that was a factor at the core of this appointment was gross enough to be ashamed in the federation, but if he is extended after a very poor qualifying, ultimately forgettable WC cycle and consistent fall out with players in the pool most notably arguably the likely highest ceiling player, it's just a joke. The squad and country deserve better. HE HAS TO GO.
If I’m Gio and I see Jordan Morris going in when we need a goal and not me I’m throwing more than a shin guard
Jordan Siebatchu
Always love the Brek Shea jokes lol
No,player is bigger than the us team
If the Federation chooses to give GGG a new contract and another cycle…..well then the Federation can go to hell. As a long time USMNT supporter who travels to multiple games per year that would be the last straw for me. Here's the truth, he NEVER should have even gotten the job in the first place. HIs resume reads a MLS coach with a failed European stint (at a smaller club) who's BROTHER is an EXECUTIVE within the US Federation and almost definitely pushed for GGG to be hired in the first place. That underqualified coach then proceeded to take one of the most talented player pools the USMNT has ever had and BARELY escaped a relatively easy group. He had to cling for life in the second half against Iran and Wales. He then proceeds to get thoroughly outcoached and TORCHED in the first game of the knockout rounds.
Remind me again, what exactly did GGG accomplish here because in my book he'll go down as one of the worst coaches this program has ever had…..relative to his available talent pool and the favorable WC group draw he received.
He CANNOT be retained. He CANNOT be allowed to ruin this up and coming generation of talent. Reyna is a HELL of a lot more important to this program than a second rate underqualified coach who never should have even been given this opportunity in the first place.
Who was Reyna going to start ahead of? Weah? Pulísic? McKennie? Musah? He didn’t look good as a false 9, which most pundits called for. Clearly neither Reyna nor Berhalter handled the situation in the best interest of the USMNT.
Honestly this makes this WC seem like a complete disappointment/failure to me. Now I wonder how much further we could have gone if we didn’t have this BS drama. Gregg needs to go, and Gio needs to grow TF up.
If he apologized to everybody to he's teammates and coaching staff and than berhalter makes thai statement in public he messed up with that now all the players ain't going to like him
I don't see how Claudio and Greg stay best friends after this. No way. Claudio will see this as a huge insult to his whole family, because really any decent coach with good communication skills would have explained what was expected in private.
If Gregg really was a close family friend, maybe this worked against him – familiarity breeds contempt after all.
Gio NEVER pouts at BvB, and their sporting director Sebastian Kehl came out with a strong statement of support for Gio:
“We have been very surprised by the content of the reporting on Gio Reyna over the last few days. He has had a really difficult time with injuries. We have known the boy for many years, although he is only 20. We see him as a good guy who works professionally and is a valued teammate in the dressing room. The fact that this is now fundamentally in doubt after a few days in Qatar is incomprehensible for us at BVB and does not do justice to Gio Reyna.”
You the best to call it "keeping up with the Kardashians in the USMNT."
We don't know what "limited role" means..it could be he wouldn't be a starter…
Your bias against Berhalter is clouding how you guys cover this..and I don't necessarily disagree with your stance on Berhalter in general
10:20 showing up your coach is not acceptable.. especially after you had apologized
No matter what the truth is about what happened , it was Gregg who made it public, all to puff himself up. And, if his account is to be believed, he made Gio apologize to the team like he was back in high school or something. It's bush league.
This entire saga shows why US Soccer as a whole needs a hard reset. Their corruption and apathy is what led to all of this, and the fact that they helped Greg lie to try and cover this up is an absolute disgrace.
Bottom Line he should have sucked it up and not named him to the team.. Gio played maybe 45 minutes a game for a month before the World Cup after being injured for a year. No other Country would have even had him on the squad. Regardless, The decision and discussion should have happened when he was named to the team. 😂
Greg claimed he wanted beautiful soccer.
When push came to shove he benched our 10. Never even played him as a 10, even. He benched our Griezmann, our Modric. He figured our best chance was the MMA; super athletes in the middle.
And let’s be fair that DID work. It got us through. We made England look dumb and exposed their overrated midfield and it felt great.
But he wasn’t playing to win. He was playing to get out of the group. To advance past the Dutch, we needed a completely different approach – MMA only gets you so far.
At the end of the day, it’s an example of a coach overthinking.
And Gio isn’t Messi or Griezmann or Modric yet. So let’s be fair and admit that, too. He’s not un-benchable, yet. It’s too early to build a team around him, so I understand the MMA strategy. I don’t agree with it, but I can understand it.
“ Sorry I’m not paying for the athletic “ lmao 😂
I usually agree with you both but you missed the point on this one. I want Gregg out more than anyone and I love Gio but what Gio did was completely selfish and cancerous to a team. Playing sports at a top level I know first hand what someone acting like that does to a teams unity. Gio is 100% in the wrong but the way Gregg handled it was also poor. Once Gio started throwing his tantrum he lost his right to expect anything. Nobody is bigger than the team. If you watch Gios body language at Dortmund it’s also horrible. He is young which should be forgiven, but we should absolutely not accept this behavior. Just watch everyone coming back into the hotel happy as ever when we won against Iran. Gio couldn’t even smile or pretend to be happy.
So if you aren’t going to play it’s ok to lack effort. Come on guys your subjective hatred is showing. Do you honestly think Gregg who is great friends with Gios family would send him home for something small. He was obviously told he wasn’t going to start which means lack of game time. Instead of playing his ass off in the scrimmage to force his way on the pitch. You don’t get to have things both ways. You act like him coming out with a statement is some big news. His agent obviously tried save his reputation and had to say something. If you two make excuses for him you obviously haven’t experienced this first hand. I do hope this sends Gregg packing but man it looks bad you two are doing handstands to make his actions acceptable.
England DID NOT out play France. 2 beautiful open field goals verses 2 bureaucratic penalty kick chances.
Dont know USNMT situation. On last one,two games befor the WC every coach have to know who will play.
WC in S.KOR-JAP our couch kick out and seand him home after 2 game the best player and star becous was disrispectful.
