Declan Rice says celebrating his goal against the Republic of Ireland in England’s 2-0 Nations League win would have been disrespectful to his family.

England were comfortable 2-0 winners in Lee Carsley’s first game in interim charge, with goalscorers Rice and Jack Grealish subjected to boos by the Irish fans for their decision to switch allegiances.

Rice, who made three senior appearances for Ireland, told Sky Sports News: “To have celebrated, it would have been really disrespectful of me.

  1. Ah, Declan – I hope one day he realises that he doesn't need to try and please everyone. He already made the disrespectful decision to leave Ireland after playing three times for us, kissing the badge, and speaking about what a pleasure it was to wear the green jersey; the disrespect had already been done. Celebrating after scoring today wouldn't have changed anyone's mind about him. He made his decision long ago, he should have celebrated his goal.

  2. "If you know your history
Then you would know where you coming from
Then you wouldn't have to ask me
Who the heck do I think I am"

    Bob Marley 1984

Respect to Carsley and Rice.. clearly men of integrity principles..

  3. He knows he should never have been allowed to play for us, Carsley no problems at all if he doesn’t want to sing, plenty of players in past haven’t either.

  4. Scrap this grandparent eligibility nonsense. Choosing your national team isn't like deciding to play for Arsenal or Shamrock Rovers. 2nd generation immigrants aren't quite English are they? Celebrate your goal with passion and pride.

  5. England done us a huge favour by taking the foot off the gas in the second half . England one of the top teams in the world , Ireland 50th or 60th odd , game was never in doubt for England. Grealixh was brilliant in that role today it really suited him

  6. The Irish need to get over it… don't see England fans crying when Zaha, Musiala, Balogun, Lookman and many more players switching allegiances after coming through the England ranks!

  7. Rice is becoming world class! Big loss for Ireland. Carsley looks real deal as Manager. Not too happy with Grealishs celebration. Id bet uncle Tony Grealish would give him a kick upsides his behind for that.

  8. I'm Irish and fair play to both Rice and Gerlish, they were born in England, so they are English and have Irish heritage. Leave them be. I remember hearing an interview with Clinton morrison and he didn't even know what Gaelic football was?? Look up North, the Northern Ireland squad have more players who have a broad English accent I wouldn't be surprised if its the same with with the ROI squad. Bloody embarrassing, the grandparents rule should be scraped 100% I think parents yeah ok, but the grandparents just shows how many countries need to scrape the barrel ffs

  9. As an Irish fan , i was over the moon when he changed , never in him, more irish in the queen,
So no big deal, & Lee, not signing, honestly, (English or not) can you blame the man… A national anthem about one person, please!!
I won't even get started on that one,
but you poor weak people think thats a big iusse!
    My goodness!

  10. Declan Rice is a great bloke I’m Irish love football, the man is English he’s playing for his country he didn’t celebrate yeah he used us but he’s English end of

  11. Grealish never represented Ireland in their 1st team or in any major game/tournament, he only played for them on Youth level (under 17s), Rice on the other end, played a few games in a major tournament for Ireland U2, can't blame him and since his injury, and fighting for playtime now with Jeremy Doku, let him celebrate when he gets the chance to score
