> **On getting the right answers from pre-season…** JE: The idea during the preseason was to make sure that we were exposed to playing against both the back four and the back five because we knew Rangers predominantly had played a back four. But I remember the coach that they had, the last time we played her in a cup game in England, she changed formation in that game.
> So I had a quite good idea that she would change formation against us as well to a back five. So that’s why I wanted to make sure that we as a team experienced both a back four and a back five. So when the game started, we knew what to do as a team no matter what they were doing. So that was the aim of the pre-season. With the way you guys were playing Wednesday, it felt like that was working but now it’s another opponent and then a new challenge.
This is pretty interesting tbh. He’s mentioned before when the analysis shows a team uses a couple formations or switches during play they’ll work on that but to remember that, presumably as she’s only managed Rangers, when Potter *played* against us she switched up the formation is pretty astounding to me. Because who’s looking at that? There’s seemingly very little reason to, and yet there was.
He has his flaws for all of us to see but tactically he’s miles above any other coach we’ve had for as long as I’ve watched the team (and I’ve watched us under all but 1 manager we’ve had).

Jonas said Beth is back for the game tomorrow, Steph will miss out tho.
I think he said that she is not “weeks away”, but no chance for tomorrow.
It was interesting how he walked around the question of banning pictures/autographs at games. Basically saying that there is no problem at Arsenal games (at Borehamwood) because we have enough security and he even mentioned that when we had problems in the stands before, we have been quick to respond to them (I remember someone fainting before). So doesn’t seem like Arsenal will ban anything. Maybe its also not really a problem because we hopefully won’t be back at Borehamwood much.
Laia said she needed to december to feel settled in, mainly bc of the language, bc she couldn’t speak as much as she wanted to. But she seemed very happy now.
Edit: The second half wasn’t really interesting to me. Idk what that reporter saw, but I don’t think the goalkeeper from Rosenborg was that crazy. Of course (I think it was after a header) there was one crazy save. But overall its more down to the misses from Atletico than a crazy GK performance. I would hope that we would score those chances because of our quality.
The last bit from Jonas reminded me of his talk with Arteta where he said he wishes he could watch from the stands and not even say anything to the players. I feel like he explained himself far better here than he did in that clip with Arteta (that he obv got clowned for).
And Laia spoke about the importance of set pieces again. So maybe we will finally have a season where we don’t just suck at them for every freekick and corner lmao

Jonas’ comments on the team’s consistency (or lack thereof) last season were very interesting to me:
“The game is like “In these moments, we are here” but maybe we’re not able to be consistent and you have to try and figure out why that is. Is it the tactical understanding? Is it the technical execution? Sometimes there is no point in working with something that hasn’t become apparent in the team, but it’s not working because no one is motivated to work on it.
Sometimes you have to wait for the right moment for it to happen so everyone understands that this is really important for us to win matches, so let’s work on that because we experienced it. So that’s the idea.”
In hindsight, you can see how this explains the squad taking some time to learn to play against the low block, for example. Even when they seemed to be getting the hang of it in one game, they’d regress a bit with the next.
And, as an aside, I love Laia Codina. What a great attitude and character to have in the team. I think she’ll prove to be an excellent transfer. Hope she has a long career in red and white.
