With Tottenham Hotspur drawing with Leicester City and beating Everton so far in the Premier League, but having tougher tests on the horizon of Newcastle United and Arsenal in the North London Derby – many fans, rivals and pundits have criticised the form of Wales winger Brennan Johnson.

The former Nottingham Forest attacker joined Spurs last summer for £47.5m on Deadline Day in the transfer window and had a good campaign in the 2023/24 PL season.

But this season under Ange Postecoglou he has struggled to find form and not scored a goal or registered an assist so far – and with Dominic Solanke, and Heung-Min Son ((ģ†ķ„ėƼ) in attack Spurs have many options to wow fans at the Tottenha Hotspur stadium.

So should Brennan Johnson be dropped or does the Welsh international deserve more chances?

Tottenham Hotspur have not been quite as active in the transfer window this summer – only signing Archie Gray from Leeds United and Yang Min-hyuk from Gangwon FC, Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth and Wilson Odobert from Burnley – but over the last few years under Ange Postecoglou Spurs have been building a top youth side.

With the help of Daniel Levy, Scott Munn, Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici Spurs have lowered the average age of the squad to 25.

The Premier League is heating up with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Bournemouth, Burnley, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Luton Town, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolves aka Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City.

The former Celtic, Yokohama F. Marinos, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory coach, Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham squad include Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, Emerson Royal, Yves Bissouma, Pierre-Emile Hojberg, Dejan Kulusevski, Bryan Gil, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-Min (ģ†ķ„ėƼ) Richarlison, Pape Matar Sarr, Jamie Donley, Alfie Dorrington, Ashley Phillips, Oliver Skipp, Rodrigo Bentancur, Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Ryan Sessegnon, Micky van de Ven, Timo Werner, Radu Dragusin, James Maddison and Dane Scarlett, Manor Solomon, Alejo Veliz, Giovani Lo Celso, Ben Davies, Fraser Forster, Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, Lucas Bergvall, Mikey Moore, Archie Gray, Yang Min-hyuk, Wilson Odobert, Dominic Solanke and Luka Vuskovic.

  1. Brennan is inconsistent , blows hot and cold….when he is great he scores and assists, but when he is lost he becomes lazy and un-focus.I think he is a better player when he comes on as a sub.

  2. Why are you a "Big Fan" of him? What has he done for you to be a "big fan"? It seems weird that now days people are fans of mediocre players (and people in general).

  3. Here is Johnson issue.. I watch him …
    1. He is good with his right foot, but weak left foot for dribbling
    2. He DOES NOT cut back in and pump run again. He goes straight at defender and hits the defender when crossing 90% of the time
    3. He must learn to gain that one yard space with on fast run or on a cut in with left foot cross
    4. Must practice overlap runs with the midfielders or the 1-2 on the run . His weapon is his speed
I think he can be a good winger for supply of crosses in the box

  4. Super straightforward really, Johnson has pace and he will play against teams that press us (more space to run into) Odobert will play against teams that has a lowblock. (dribble pass the fullbacks).

  5. Brennan is a sub. He rarely beats players, finishing is average. Him and Werner just need to be 2nd options. Wilson Odobert needs to play, lads class. Brennan Johnson wouldn’t start at any top 10 club.

  6. Sonny, you're embarrassing yourself with your defence of Johnson.
The Odobert stats you quoted are meaningless. Like all of last season, lots of fancy take ons leading to ZERO end product.
Jeez, this generation of millennial and gen Z Levy fan boys are like a sick joke.

You watch, £10m Chiesa at Liverpool smash Johnson and Odobert stats within weeks

  7. "i don't like throwing players under the bus"… erm that's exactly what you're doing with this utterly vacuous video. chill out, it's been two games… judge him at xmas

  8. This will go down as one of the worst pieces of business we have ever done. To play this system and style you need courage something Brennan sorely lacks. He's afraid to lose the ball and doesn't take the risks necessary for success. On top of that he's a below average finisher and seemingly can only play on the right when opposition leaves space for him to run into. any sort of low block and he is useless because his first touch is often wayward and he lacks the intelligence and polished game to play quick intricate passes to unlock defenses. Odobert and Mikey Moore will be preferred to him by the end of the year and I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into another player who we can't shift on because he won't get anything better than Spurs.

  9. He is just not gd enough to beat players down the flank…too predictable most of the time. He can only be a impact player coming in the last 20min or 25min of the game when opponent r tired. He can nvr start a game….we need to sign someone better then him…

  10. I think he's struggling with confidence and the fans aren't helping the situation, evidenced by the fact that he's had to turn off his comments. For a young player it can be very bad, we should do better as fans

  11. BJ will do good in games where opposition defenses do not play a very low line, he is not technically gifted so when games become stretched than he is at his best

  12. You’re a big fan of Brennan Johnson BUT………
FFS, support the team. If he’s ā€œstruggledā€ do you really think Ange would play him for 95 minutes ??
Saying that, Newcastle away is a tough game so me, I’d bring in Bentancur & Solanke for Odeburt & Johnson & put Kulusevski & Son out onto the RW & LW respectively. Stiffen that midfield up a bit. Odeburt & Johnson could be devastating from the bench.

  13. I like the idea of Brennan coming off the bench when defense is tired or starting in games when teams don’t use low block tactics.
Another commenter mentioned this, but I’m too lazy to find his/her name šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

  14. I know that Sonny’s reply to me will be ā€œwho do I start this week?ā€
I don’t know. It depends on solanke fitness and preferred defensive style of Newcastle.
I don’t know the answer to either of those questions.
Son and kulu are terrific because they can both be used in different positions. I prefer kulu as a wing and son as a striker if solanke unable to go. Odobert other wing.
Son, solanke, Johnson if Newcastle prefer high line.
Kulu needs to be in starting 11 unless he needs rest. He was great as attacking midfielder against Everton
