He's never had a brilliant season. Sure he raised his profile with that assist against Croatia in the Opening game for England at Wembley at Euro 2020, but even in that same tournament which gave him a lot of recognition, especially in the latter stages, he seemed like a poor man's Fred (who I never rated also in Manchester United's midfield). Just like Fred, he looked like didn't know how to shoot. Pass it 5 yards sideways and backwards, sure, but his shooting was Sunday League standard.

Phillips has always only been a Championship level player. I was gobsmacked when Pep signed him..just could not understand it.🤔🤷🏼♂️
He should go back to Leeds
Philips has lost his sharpness and is too slow and cumbersome for the Premier League. He was a liability at West Ham and I saw some of that again in the Man City preseason friendlies
He should go back to Leeds and try to help to promote them again
Phillips's qualities were natured through Biesla's style of football which involved him being a single pivot defense midfield role where when the team attacks he drops into a third central defender role so I see the logic in him being played in defense especially as he's a defense player who looks for forward runs to play the ball to an attacker.
Id take him at Liverpool a pre season behind him and olay him CB in games he looked good in my eyes
