Toronto FC head coach and former coach of both the men’s and women’s Canadian national teams expressed his shock and devastation upon learning about the drone spying scandal that has rocked Canada Soccer. Herdman stated that during his tenure as coach in the Canadian program, he is ‘highly confident’ his teams never took part in spying.

  1. What a mealy mouth liar this guy is. "Highly Confident" is just plausible deniability at its worst. So much for accountability from the top.

  2. If Canada is doing it, I’d bet money more countries are doing the exact same thing. Canada is just an easy target because we don’t belong in the soccer community apparently.

  3. I feel bad for the players, but let's be honest they would have benefitted from these actions. I'm sure those involved would have understood the risk, given that Paris is under threat of terrorist activity and they would have known that flying a drone was a potentially criminal activity, so why do it unless the risk was worth the reward? Was the risk worth the reward in the past and by not getting caught did they have the belief that it could be done without incrimination? Unfortunately the team needs to withdraw and a full independent investigation needs to be done to determine if this was done in the past to the advantage of the team(s). If it is proven that this was done in Tokyo then it needs to be dealt with accordingly. Canadian athletes have benefitted from the athletes from other countries being kicked out and banned after being caught cheating, so they need to held to that same standard – whether they knew about it or not they still benefitted. Sad.

  4. Houston Astros were the scapegoat for teams stealing signs, so that every other cheating team could go on merrily doing it (Yankees, Red Sox….), so now is team Canada soccer going to be scapegoated the same way so everyone else can keep using drones?

  5. Herdman built the foundation for the current program at canada soccer. He trained and oversaw all of the current coaches including bev priestman. He definitely started all of this drone stuff and built that culture. Now everyone who has worked with him is taking the fall. Herdman lying that he wasn't involved is so shameful.

  6. "I'm highly confident at an Olympic Games or World Cup we've never been involved in those types of activities" lol Reminds me of the Rob Ford answer to when a Toronto city councilor asked him (in the midst of his crack smoking scandal) if he remembered years earlier being publicly drunk at a Leafs game and swore he'd never act like that again and he said "and it has never happened again at the Air Canada Centre" Anyways this is much ado about nothing relatively speaking
