England vs. Netherlands FULL REACTION ⚽ Ollie Watkins’ goal propels England to Final | ESPN FC

hello and welcome into latest edition of espnfc I’m Dan Thomas joining the studio by Craig Bley Steve M manman and Franklin B that’s what I was waiting for the celebrations has walk scores the winning goal that sees England through to the final to face Spain on Sunday goodness gracious me England fans once again suffering through but they did it they made it in the end’s going to kill me very angry I don’t want to name names but somebody was very happy because no extra time well I think everyone’s happy there’s no extra time by the way when we sat down just before we came on you my say let’s just confirm then what happened it was of course the Dutch that would open the scoring Simons with the opening goal great finish from him to give the Netherlands uh one-nil Victory but then Harry Kane would be award well England will be awarded a penalty after a VAR of Harry Kane converting the spot kick England so much the better side in the first half but the second half it was back to boring slow football but this time they were playing against a side who are playing slower more boring football as well and in the end we saw substitutions from GIS Southgate Co Palmer coming on he would link up with Watkins a brilliant finish from the Aston Villa Striker and that is enough to see England through to their second or backto back European Championship final we welcome to the show uh Mario Malo is Mario’s got a suit on celebration tie yeah exactly you’re taking it off uh we’ll be hearing from Mario in a moment let’s kick things off in studio ma in the end another final yes um brilliant results um Overjoyed for a lot of the lads there because I know I know them personally again if you it’s it’s hard speaking you know five 10 minutes after the game when you’ve just reached the European final but they do need to improve again don’t doubt first half they were they were really positive second half uh it was not a good football advert whatsoever I thought both teams were terrible in the second half but the introduction of Cole Palmer him linking up with Ole Watkins brings a little bit of life into the England side and and they get the goal right at the last minute and it was impossible it was impossible for the Dutch to to respond but to be honest they didn’t offer very little in the second half I thought it was a really disappointing second half yeah really really but whoever would have got through have got their way cut out if Spain are going to play like the Spanish teams we’ve seen But fantastic englands have got there and um you know they have to move forward now work hard and try and try and come up with a battle plan to um to to to to beat the Spanish at least Spain won’t have to spend a lot of time between now in the final brainstorming about what the England team’s going to be I wonder if oh yeah you might see some changes be careful you know you know when a manager sits in and the coach and go oh I wonder what he’ll do you know that’s what he’ll do that I I would would imagine you know maybe trippy is at most at risk who went off at half timee for Luke Shaw but Luke Shaw didn’t have anything he no and he clearly thinks he’s not fit enough play doesn’t look fit you’re right to start the game and play the whole 90 minutes and maybe he feels that Luke Shaw against fresh fit quick players particularly the Spanish I mean he’d be up against Lin Mal uh he’s not ready for that so expect a a cut and Pace but that that’s getting ahead of it a little bit look bearing in mind the side of the draw the two best teams are in the final from the side of the draw right at the end of the day you know England was stronger and Switzerland didn’t play particularly well they were stronger side in Holland they showed that in the first half uh went back a little bit defensive as per usual in the second half but all they had really was was v v hor and they didn’t use them often enough uh Holland in in the second half they didn’t get enough cross balls into the box uh for the big filler but you have to be delighted for individuals like Ole Watkins yeah what a moment for that man’s career coming on where he’s been where he’s played coming through he’s now at Villa he’s a big shot at Villa uh and it was a big shot for England uh you know coming on scoring the winner in the semi-final something that that he will never ever forget we talked about about that goal and it’s Cole Palmer just adding something a little different when it comes to he he wants to turn he wants to go forwards he wants to try and thread something positive doesn’t he at the game particularly in the second half was so negative everybody both teams this was this is not an England thing both teams going sideways and backwards both scared to to to try something and as soon as Cole Palmer comes on listen he didn’t have a huge amount to do but he hadot had a great chance but he had a great chance and uh and he plays the ball forward he gets an assist for Watkins but as um as Craig said the bigger picture is you know the Ole Watkins who sat you know for the last couple of games hasn’t done much and when calls upon it wasn’t even an Tony this time it so G out gate deserves a bit of credit for saying you know what it might olle Watkins today and he gets the winner in The 91st minute I mean a lovely lovely moment for him and his family isn’t it and that’ll Elevate him now to to another level and he’ll be remembered in in many many years to come and that things like that you um that’s what you that’s what you cling on to that’s the happiest I’ve ever been at an England winner well it’s because there’s no extra time extra time yeah I’ll take that over yeah overall I would say that it’s a deserving win for me uh we saw England being better overall during the 1990 minutes comparing to the Dutch but the Dutch they they were a pale copy of the French team yesterday when you started to score with the early goal you say okay they are into the game and suddenly they disappear after 10 minutes after the uh that England came back like yesterday with Spain came back and France didn’t exist anymore and that was Dutch the Dutch didn’t exist anymore during the game England were much better in the in the first half yeah after it was wasn’t good second half but overall yeah the England England english team did the did the job and and for me that’s the best game they had so far that the first half yeah but overall you know you have to take the 90 minutes they score the goal uh the changes were important they were late goodness for the change they were late but important you know but uh yeah it’s what we were expecting now I really think that we want to see football being the winner of of this Euro meaning the Spanish winning the Euro yeah we’ll talk about the final a lot more of course later on Mario how are you feeling I mean I’m disappointed of course because you know I watched the game just like you guys and I felt like you know like like what Frank said you know we we get in a game we scored a goal and we see like okay you’re on the front food you see them then the pie gets injured the moment The Pie gets injured Kuman makes a substitution and he puts feirman on feirman putting on having an extra midfielder because he’s saw that you know he he had a feeling that there was going to be dismantled in the middle of the park but then you had no Outlet anymore because now you’re looking for something and then he’s tried to answer that that answer he’s Tred to go with you know when Memphis comes on FAL comes on and then he puts Marin as a striker but it’s just unsettled it took them too long to adjust because this the setup from Dutch national team was so much towards the pie and I don’t know if they really had the the opposite answer only for the last 20 minutes when w would come on but he puts him on at the second half and the second half you know look running and chasing the the ball down and trying to put pressure on England this is kind of putting them in the favorite position because if you’re going to battle towards energy and commitment and whatever strength and everything that is so much what England is it’s like bread and butter for them so when Holland tried to do that in the second half when I see them doing that I already started to worry because I knew that this was it’s going to be a very very difficult thing to win of course you get situation with a referee but you cannot wait for that you got to win the game and with the one n up you got to drive the boat a little bit longer than what Holland did they were so slow I mean drie how many times he got the ball put the ball back I mean he was like a song every two minutes from MAA saying okay drize give the ball back that was that they were so slow there the possibility of going forward and up this slow down and up go go back what are you waiting for correct they didn’t deserve anything yeah but I think Frank I think they were worried too I think they were worried a little bit too you know when I looked at the Dutch right I I totally agree with you the way we play football is normally we are in control but the moment we play against a team that is in control when we don’t want it it becomes unsettling it start unsettling us and I know look some teams look when we play against France you know before the game that you’re not going to be in control but against the English even even if you know to have more talents on the field you still feel tactically you can set it in a way that you can control things but when that moment comes when we cannot control it we lose it because we don’t have the experience away from the pie uh fandy even you know um uh what is it the fry the way whatk can score that goal he has enough experience when a when a striker comes into the box what is the key thing with a striker always wants close your legs that is what you know you learn that close your legs I’m not going to say it was not a great goal what he took what kids because I mean we know what he did at filla Great form but still you got to be smarter when you come from that angle close your legs because you know he’s going to strike it and hit far post I’m don’t really agree with that I mean that’s a natural reflex that you make your body bigger and you try to anticipate and U and it’s true that we saw that and I know that London Donovan was saying that for about another goal during the competition but when you’re on the side and you have a cross you automatically open your legs because you try to make your body bigger and we see that with uh German goalkeepers they make themselves bigger therefore they they put their their legs apart and and that’s what you have to do and um it’s lucky or maybe it’s what you what they want what the striker wants they put in between your legs but it’s a normal reflex movement uh the best will be to keep your legs uh but it’s impossible it’s almost impossible to do that well if you I think he just needs to get tight that’s all it was when you see him get the shot away Dev is yeah about five foot away from him actually but it’s he has to be tight Walker has to go out on the sav Shimon goal he tries to to stay and put himself on the side but you have to go forward to to to block the angle but you do some stuff natural stuff and it’s sometime impossible to cop but if you don’t try and make yourself bigger around the box then you get accused of not doing your job defensively you know if you if you yeah if you go straight like that what the hell you done you know you’re damned if you do you’re damned if you don’t you’re trying to block a shot you you put your leg out usually your outside leg or whatever you try and block it the bottom line here is the goalkeeper still has to expect to strike whether it comes through the Defenders that was a great shot that was a great shot for for Watkins there’s nothing to do from the defender absolutely magnificent and it’s the only place he could score so I mean that in that corner or should score but go back to the dumre down that right hand how many crosses did he get in by the way from that right side and for for V hor you put Vost on for one reason and one reason only you pump the ball up to and it was England’s left England’s left side is Kieran trippy out there who’s not he’s a good Defender but let’s be honest he’s in this England side because needs most he’s not had a great second half of this season it fell absolutely fell flat in his face season around about Christmas for Newcastle he started making mistake after mistake after mistake he lost his confidence he’s in the side you can get at them but even if you’re a Winger don’t matter if you’re a Winger or a fullback you don’t need to beat them as soon as the ball comes out to you m and Frank instead of turn them back the way you get you get a couple yard touch out your feet and whip it in whip it in you’ve got a guy six’ nothing from open Play was nothing from open tell you I think that tells you where the Dutch are right across the board they’re tidy they’ve got one or two really good players but when the front line is a struggling Memphis depai yeah and he can’t go to the bench and the best option is V Vost come on Dutch Football that’s the best two yeah you can get when you look at the Players they’ve produced in those possessions over the years that’s a death of T yeah but some players can step up you know I mean we are talking about Spain and the Beautiful football they are the striker of Spain is Morata who’ve been struggling all his carrier along with many many different clubs and and he’s a captain of it he managed to score without him yeah but he plays for atletic before Memphis depay Yeah that tells you where Memphis depay is when AO Morata who’s been around the houses is still a better option than depay who generally comes off the bench for at let why did things change so much in the second half okay I think because England revert into this some is it tiredness was T it shouldn’t be I’m not two extra time England yeah but if we’re in 110 minutes and people are cramping up I I’ll I’ll accept that right but we’re 60 Minutes in yeah yeah yeah if you if you can’t play an hour and you’re still freshing an hour after an hour in the semi-final you shouldn’t be on the field in the first place I think it’s whenever a team gets a little bit of possession and confidence they start to sit a little deeper and are frightened then to go and squeeze up as a back line and squeeze everybody on in case something hurts them in behind now I know we’ll get to the bigger picture Spain but you can’t allow the type of possession that Holland had in the second half and did literally nothing with it and not a lot I don’t think you can allow Spain no to have that because they will poke and prod and cut you open don’t you think that England players second half they say okay we keep the the score we’ve been so good on penalty kicks surely not not with a quality there you you got to go through 45 plus 30 minutes extra keep on doing what they were doing in the first half well that’s what I’m asking yeah for penalties there is no reason to but we’ve seen it before when penalties weren’t even on the line we saw in the group stages didn’t we I think they just get a little bit as we’ve said before they get a little bit safe they get a little bit more secure they start passing at the back and think oh we’ve got the ball here we’ll try and tire the opposition out but when you just go from side to side to side to side it drives you mad and the opposition then got lulled into doing exactly the same when they had the ball they went from side to side it was ridiculous V van dke must have had more passes than anybody on the pitch and that shows you what it was like defensively Jon Stones one side had more passes than anybody Vil van djk the other side that should not happen and um they just I think they looked as if both teams wants to get to wants to get to extra time I don’t know why because the second half was a terrible Affair until the 91st minute when we get the goal and it’s a couple of England Subs whether it’s just fresh legs whether it is fresh mentally coming on wanting to go forwards wanting to make the run into the Penalty Box the right ball in and Ole Watkins doing what he’s done a lot of the time moving and as he is with his face touch moving to his left hoping to get the shot away he knows the defender has to step and then he’s hoping that the you know the the through the leg shot is on but wow it was a wonderful goal and well connected go yeah but yeah but also like like what Stevie just said you know like all those plays at the back of England you know like a stones and a walker they have a you know Pep Guardiola what is Pep’s way of playing football you understand it’s similar to you understand he why he idolized you know Y and C so much you know the Dutch guy it’s it’s because our Legend you know he’s a legendary why because his philosophy was always we have control of the game and we keep the ball till the opponent bites and we hurt them when they don’t expect us to hurt them Stones Walker have the same mentality because they have learned playing like that keep the ball in the team at the second half you s them the way they move we Dutch want to play like that too but one thing why I feel the differen is between the Dutch that want to do it and when you look at a Spain side that does similarities they make you tired we make you run behind the ball and then they have Wingers that can eliminate Defenders and that’s what Holland doesn’t have we don’t eliminate you know if you look at yamal or if you look at Williams William maybe didn’t have the greatest game yesterday but yamal you understand he can if he runs at you as a Defender I’ve been an outside Defender myself playing in those positions what you don’t want is a player running at you every time being comfortable I think in Holland we all play inside the field we play inside the field so the middle of the park becomes too condensed for us and then we don’t have the solution sometimes while we don’t have the player that can go on the outside and beat the player on speed and cross the ball then I I go back to the basics of the game you know why do we have to calculate what nowadays we have to calculate everything it’s like it’s a chair game and everything has to be put on where how the opponent reacts and what we do the Dutch they started well and with the craziness and the pace that you need to to win a game so why suddenly you have to think about oh what’s going to happen the next 17 minutes why don’t you carry on and if you even if you consider goal and we saw that with Liverpool some days ago some years ago where they won the championship because of the vertical game and the and the craziness that players were giving into the the the football and it’s what as a as in a neutral point of view it’s what we want to see because we want to enjoy the entertainment and they think too much it’s like they get the ball at drie is the best example today oh okay do I do that do I do that no no I think the coach wants me to not lose the ball so I go back stop well I wouldn’t say stop thinking because many people think already football players they don’t think at all so but I think just go for it because he would doing an inter malan shirt sh sorry I just finished chvy Simon scored the goal because he didn’t think about the position have you seen the way he shot the the the the the goal he was completely unbalanced but he went for it and he scored the goal that’s you have to stop thinking the best way of analyzing and switching a little bit of of I think the best way of looking at analyzing England from my second half from my first half was the involvement of foron and Bingham yeah foron and Bingham particularly foron in the first half the two of them were always in the ball foron was always getting himself on the half T inside because the wing backs were pushed on you know Baya Saka and and uh trippy were pushed on so those two could knit theel in sight as the game were on England morphed into what you would call a back five and those two have to start dropping deeper and we we barely saw them in the second half and then he makes a change but it was like it was chalk and cheese wasn’t it you know the foron and Bing and particularly foron performance he looked really really Lively in the old f for and getting on it and he hit the crossbar he was coming in just looked so much like his old self second half when they revert back and everybody starts dropping deeper the two key players yeah are out the game are they’re not having the influence in the game that they were in the first half and that’s a big problem for England uh now when they play Spain we know the way Spain will play they’ve got there’ll be a 433 mhm and are those Wing backs of Southgate plays that way going to be going to allow themselves to be shoved back cuz if they’re shoved back can you imagine what that Spanish Midfield will do to the English Midfield they will completely overrun England so that’s going to be a big call for Southgate why does he take so long to make substitutions M when everyone could see what was going on in that second I don’t know is the answer but then do we even question him because again well he saw in the fin know but I’ve said it before he has to win the final Dan he has to win the final to win his over he has to win the final for us all to say oh yes that’s what because performances up until now haven’t been haven’t been great they’ve met a very very average Netherland side let’s be honest very average Netherland side in the semi-finals which they’ve won great fantastic they deserve a pat on the back a whole lot of congratulations but they need to win the final to be able to get away with playing this way and picking the starting 11 Time After Time After Time again when they have not done it they have not done it and in the end it’s substitutions or or substitutes who have got them out of trouble and everybody everybody watching today wanted substitutions made earlier than he did but he got away with it again and we’ve said before better be lucky than good because he’s got away with it again the subs um uh latched on to each other Palmer to Watkins in the goal but I would love to see a different selection uh 11 selection at the start of the game play the same record you played ahead of every match I’ve said it for the last six years I think they’re two negative and I think they’re twoo negative to win trophies and hopefully they’ll prove me wrong but if they don’t I’ll still be saying the same rhetoric time after time after again they’ve got this incredible generational group of players against a very average bunch of countries in Europe at this moment in time bar one or bar two probably with Germany but they got knocked out but certainly bar one and they’re going to meet them in the final and if they get turned over easily by Spain we’ll sit here again going why has he played that 11 why didn’t he put Palmer on earlier why didn’t he use e why didn’t he use Anthony gold and that’ll be the question that will always hang over gett outgate he’s a reactive type of manager and Steve Holland is number two is equally as reactive he’s equally defensive so when he goes to his teammate and go his number two and goes what you think he’s a bit like you think what you think think we all have a hard time to give what we saw credit to sou gate I think he more credit to the player that he has for for for that for those results semi-final final runner up maybe winning the the Euro it’s mostly because of the talent of the that generation can cope with the situation he’s too conservative he he doesn’t he doesn’t use the talent that He has on the bench to refresh this team and to take risks and that’s that’s unbelievable that he has those kind of results and and but it for me it doesn’t deserve all the credit that people are going to give him if he wins who’s to say we wouldn’t have made the final but made the fin in a bit of style if he would have changed it round you know Playing devil’s advocate you always think oh we’ve got to the final isn’t it amazing but we could have and should have and probably would have got to the final and being a bit more proactive and being a bit more better on the eye and better entertaining with this group of players because I’ll go back to the the the group stages and the teams we’ve played we’ve dodged the bullet being this side of the group so why not have a goal but at least it wasn’t 90 minutes of draw today mean I say that because I say that because minutes without no not quite but I say that because there’s a couple of games been extra time but if we’re just taking the N the 90 minutes and and the main games it’s been draw it’s been terrible I’m not so negative on England today I thought there was glimpses of what they can really do well do well yeah but they can can they patch it together for 90 minutes or for 120 minutes so I I thought that was you know I thought that was a a lot better from them um I’m not so negative about them today uh and listen what’s wrong he he’s he’s the man he’s the man at the moment Gary South Kate he’s and what by the way has a lot of been people been talking about the penalty that was given are we happy with the penalty I I think most of us were happy with the penalty yeah yeah there’s nothing to compain usual people V have got involved don’t don’t be looking at you but you look at Twitter more than me yeah you look at the negative bits I look at the happy bits what negative Mario last word on this to you who do you want to win the final I mean like look look as a Dutch like like how he said that you understand look my background is of course you know more to the English side and the way I talk to them and I talk about the games I would love it to to to be England why because Jimmy is on that side too today I was what is he doing there I I I support him and I want him to live that trophy I don’t hear you Frank I don’t want to hear you okay and I say England I want to hear it I spoke to him before the tournament and I said I let him do his job so after the tournament I want to get the call and say how is it and he says yeah I did it okay that’s all I want [Music]

  1. Fuh mee, a fink it's cummin home guys, a fink it's cummin home! The easiest path handed to a team to win a final. Let's get it lads, a fink it's cummin to ma home!

  2. This Le Beuof guy only knows how to suck up to English speakers on English language TV. That's all I ever see him do. He thinks this endears him to the audience. The Beef.

  3. Horrible penalty decision, Netherlands got ripped off, that penalty changed the game. As an England fan, I know I am going to be frustrated, because it's going to be the exact same team again against Spain and the pain of hoping we get lucky again.

  4. the Dutch froze after the debatable pen call. extra time wouldve been deserved, but england had to win this. good job england, now get yourselves that cup.

  5. Omfg seriously. Craig Burley is a nothing man. Always will be. Macca my boy shut it you was never good enough for england. Praise the boys Praise Southgate. And shut the f up negative pricks. Burley is an embarrassment

  6. I'm pretty sure Macca was never on an England team that won anything. He'd swap places with these lads all day long. For that chance. He's whinging about a team that's figured out how to win.

  7. I haven't heard one pundit talk about the Dutch losing De Jong and Koopmeiners before the tournament. It was an over achievement for them to reach the semi finals with Koeman also being a trash coach. England lucked out there.
