“We’ve got to give Southgate credit” | Rob Dorsett previews Netherlands semi-final at Euro 2024
first up though we are two days from England’s semifinal against the Netherlands on Wednesday Rob dorsit and our team in Germany will be bringing us all the buildup and I tell you what let’s speak to him live right now you want to see the other Rob not this Rob there he is hooray for that uh otherwise I would have been talking to myself for a while which is not good uh Rob very good morning to you England just one game away them from consecutive European championship finals in all your time covering England could you have imagined that that would be the case no is the truth no I couldn’t and Rob I’ve had to recheck what I’ve been saying throughout the tournament and the buildup to this tournament remember at the start of this tournament I said England this was the worst prepared England squad I’d ever known going into a major tournament that was a big claim but I think it’s still think it was right in terms of the fitness of Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw and Kieran trippier and John stones and beo saaka they all were weren’t match fit so that’s what I meant by that and I’ve been looking at what I’ve been saying throughout the tournament as well and it’s been really quite negative every single England fan we’ve spoken to has been quite negative in dorf has must have spoken to dozens scores of them uh in and around the town center before that quarterfinal with Switzerland and they were all really down and critical of GIS Southgate um and here we are one game away from a second consecutive Euros final which is extraordinary and I think we do get a little bit bit complacent I think that’s why Gareth Southgate has been so frustrated and upset by some of the personal abuse that has come his way I mean there’s a lot of quotes from him in the newspapers today that he gave to them after that win over Switzerland the other night where he’s talked about the personal abuse being tough I think he’s scratching his head and saying well what do you what more do you want England fans do you not remember the dark days and yet England haven’t really played very well have they let’s be honest they’ve they’ve it’s guts and character that has got them to this stage in the tournament where they are now and Gary Neville and people who know much more about football than me keep saying if they carry on the way they are England’s luck is going to run out I’m not so sure we’ve seen teams in the past that have won European championships with uh having not played the best football but managed to find a way to win and we’ve always criticized England for not being able to do that well they’ve managed it out here we’ve got to give them credit for that I think we’ve got to give Southgate and Steve Holland who were awarded their commemorative cap by the by Harry Kane for having a 100 games in charge of England yesterday in Camp I think we’ve got to give those two some real credit for where they ripped up the plan ripped up the copy book everything they planned coming out to this tournament and they tried so far they ripped it up and started again with a new formation new Personnel players in different positions and they had three days to prepare that on the training field against Switzerland and it was much much better it was great I looked at the notes I’d written and what I provided to the Sky Sports app in terms of our live commentary throughout the game it was really positive England found space they were passing the ball better the Press was better um they were creating chances that sacka was magnificent down the right hand side was cutting the ball back beating his Defender and yet they didn’t have a shot on target until sacker equalized in the 80th minute so it’s a really strange feeling where we are right now with this England team celebrating worried it’s all a bit of a mish mash isn’t it let’s be honest right now but the fact of the matter is I could be standing here a week from today with England as European Champions they only need to win two more games to do that I say only the Netherlands is a really really stiff test isn’t it on Wednesday night in Dortmund much tougher than anything they’ve faced so far yeah and maybe because as you were talking I always try to process Rob and yeah it’s maybe about the perceived strength of the opposition that England have faced so far which could be the uh sticking point for a lot of England fans talk us through the selection dilemas though for GIS Southgate ahead of Wednesday’s semi just picking up on what you said there Rob though by the way look at three of the four teams that are in these semi-finals I think three of the four have stumbled away here on and formed much less than they would have expected only Spain really have looked decent in this tournament France and the Netherlands have had their struggles just like England have had but yeah in terms of the selection dilemas look I don’t think Gareth Southgate will make many changes from what we saw in that quarterfinal against Switzerland I think it will be the same shape I think he’ll play with wing backs again I think the Wingers will have to buy their time on the bench uh I’m I’m pretty confident Harry Kane will start up front and the experiment with Jude Bellingham and Phil foden to a large extent worked they didn’t make the same runs and getting each other’s way so I think it be the same structure largely the same players maybe the only change that GTH Southgate will consider will be Mark Gay and now that he’s not suspended anymore coming into the middle of that back three in place of ezri conza that would be tough on conza because that was his first start in a major tournament and I thought he was outstanding one of England’s best players on the night and yet he might be the one to make way for gay coming back because gay had been England’s best defender throughout the tournament up till point so I think Southgate will bring him back in I there’s a debate on the the left hand side of course is Luke sh fit enough to start for England I think if he is Southgate may be tempted to make that switch and drop Kieran trippier um but my gut feeling is he’ll probably stick with trippier he has done in big moments at the latter stages of tournaments throughout his reign as England manager he loves the security the experience the the N the leadership that Kieran trippa brings and I just wonder the medical impact that 45 minutes has had on Luke Shaw when he hasn’t played any football before that for almost 5 months that might be dictated by the medical reports that England and G Southgate are getting behind the scenes but my gut feeling is it will be trippier ahead of sha still on that left hand side and I wonder whether one of the other changes he might make G Southgate is to switch Wings we know that Cody gakpo has been the Netherlands best player so far on that left wing cutting in from that left wing I just wonder I just wonder whether switching Kieran tripier to to rightwing back to counter Cody gakpo might work but will Southgate think that takes too much away from beo saaka who is England’s best player in that quarterfinal against Switzerland if he has to switch from the right hand side where he’s been playing all season long for Arsenal and go on the left to some all that up I don’t think there’ll be many changes gay for conza may be the only one but Southgate maybe considering little little switches and little tweaks elsewhere as well yeah there is absolutely no doubt Rob that uh the Dutch would rather Harry Kane wasn’t on the team Sheet but what up what about UPF front wasn’t it Ivan Tony’s impact has it given Southgate any food for thought there this is a really interesting one and it’s a head and heart debate thing for me if I’m honest with you Harry Kane has been England’s greatest goalgetter he has been England’s most important player in the gas Southgate era he is not single-handedly but he’s been the major reason why England have done so well in tournaments why they’re going to their third semi-final in the last four major tournaments that’s extraordinary that’s a sort of success we haven’t seen in any generation of England fan and Harry Kane has been a huge reason for that he’s got two goals in this tournament already he’s only won behind the the chase for the Golden Boot right now Cody gpo’s got three Harry Kane will be aware of that and you know that that Harry Kane will have his eyes set on trying to win the Golden Boot in the final two games as he hopes it anyway um and yet it felt different in dorf in in that quarterfinal on Saturday night when Harry Kane was substituted albeit after he a nasty Clash off the pitch and he had he cramped up a little bit I think when he was substituted I’m sure every England fan thought hang on he’s our best penalty Taker and he’s going off and this is penalties looming and what happened Harry Kan watch from the sidelines as England’s other players the new generation got up fearlessly and scored five perfect penalties and so that felt different to me and also bear in mind that when Ivan ton has come on the pit for England I think he’s held the ball up better I think he’s in a better State physically than Harry Kane right now he’s able to make those runs he’s able to take the pressure off England when they’ve cleared the ball up and needed to release some of the pressure he’s won free kicks on halfway he he’s collected the ball his chest and laid it off to fullbacks and he scored that no eyes penalty extraordinarily in the shootout as well so there’s it feels like there’s a Changing of the Guard there look I’m sure Harry Kane will start in Dortmund on Wednesday no doubt about it I’m sure whether he finishes the game whether that he’s in this the the this the 11 that are on the pitch at the end well that remains to be seen I think to a large extent [Music]

Leaving Madison behind was a bad idea
State of these comments. It’s either full of stupid kids or morons. Only the English could hate their second best ever manager (fact). Get behind your bloody country for once. Idiots.
Dorsett = top chats. 3 🦁 keep praying as it's how Argentina fans ended 36 yrs of hurt. I'm glad Gareth heeded Maths Profs, who advised him to favour character over talent. GS must get Trent on at half time (or start) as he makes Jude & Harry & Saka & Gordon & Palmer & much better like Pirlo improved Totti & Del Piero in 2006 WC win. Bring Foden on at 60 mins as he is like John Barnes & and can't do it as a starter, but cud be fine as an impact sub.
If Harry fades again, Toney must be subbed on at 60 mins, (or start Ivan & sub on HARRY at HT).
Decide both semi & final teams at dawn 5.45 am to 7.45 am & 3 Lions will win EURO24. Gareth will be made a Sir like his hero Sir Alf.
Not it’s not guts and character, we scored more goals than our opponent, which is the point. Wish the media would be better…proper bit of back peddling 😂
Oh, yeah. Rob seems to forget a fluke goal in dubious 'added time' saved them. Nothing to do with a manager or tactics.
Credit for what, being lucky to be drawn in an easy group and route?
The guy is clueless, he talk physical fitness of the oldest players being the big challenge going into Euros. (which is only a problem when you play them instead of better younger players)
When it has been the lack og relational skills between the players and a clear system that fits the players at hand and not Southgates fixed mindset.
TAA has actually better defensiv stats than Walker in Premier League, and even the blind knows how much better going forward he is. but Southgate choose to play underperforming favorites.
Nope, he is a total fool
No tf we don't
People forgot the dark days,he means the dark half century, 2016, 14, 12, 2010. 2006, 02, 2000, 98, 1992, 1988, 86, 84, 82, 80, 78, 74
Actually, I am sure we didn;t qualify for a few of those, plus 08, 94.
Only 2 semi-finals since 66 before Southgate. Sven, Capello were really boring. SO was Graham Taylor.
I don't understand y English fan keep complaining bout their national team, and yet they keep qualify, and they keep complaining 😂
credit due to be fair for curing my insomnia 😴🛌
Give him credit? For what? They've been terrible, and speaking as a neutral, unwatchable. They made it this far based on: 9 minutes of solid play, a moment of individual brilliance, pure luck, and everyone they've played playing poorly. You see a lot of tired bodies out there (it's been a long season) but with the England squad they also look like they just don't have a plan.
Credit for what? For being afraid to push forward…Man they got lucky from the set go with an easy group till the quarter.I think you got piles on your head.Let alone those top sides, hell, they would suffer against Austria.
Course he deserves credit… 3rd semi final in 4 tournaments, another penalty shoot out win, ffs, people must have forgotten how bad it used to be
I think Rob Dorsett should hand in his P45. British media is just as bad as Southgate. This man is part of the FA-Englands boys club, where he never asks Southgate challenging questions and protects the FA at all costs.
Rob represents all of Sky journalism for international games, and has done for years. So the biasdness runs deep in this fella.
We need journalists that aren’t biased, and know football at a high level to help educate couch fans to view the game at a higher technical level.
Sky have a duty to this great nation as our main sports provider
Universal credit. Time for a new appointment!!!
Southgate did nothing of tactical brilliance in any of the matches. It's the likes of Saka, Bellingham, and Foden that have worked hard and got results. Gareth could fly home tomorrow, and we wouldn't know any different.
"We've got to give Southgate credit". No. No, we don't.
Rob Dorsett – the Gareth Southgate of the Sky News Team.
He's been the most successful England manager in the last 40 years, but yeah, he doesn't know what he's doing. These ex-players, journalists and talking heads, don't have a clue what they're taking about. They aren't managers, anyone can say he's doing it wrong, when they don't have put their tiny bollocks on the line. If England are winning playing at 30-40%, that's a good thing. There's room fro improvement. Winning's all that counts, who cares how they do it.
Anyone that’s not giving Southgate any credit are 🔔🔚
Or you droo stoned whos bern bsng average snd sometimes a liability and play konsa and guehi
Even if England wins the Euro's Southgate is the most terrible coach ever to coach England
So many entitled snowflakes who have never achieved anything in their life commenting on here. The arrogance to think their opinions on a profession they have never worked in are correct.
Nope. No way. Clueless is his middle name. It's Gareth Clueless Southgate. Even Ted Lasso can do a better job than him. No tactical IQ, just pure luck and relying on players' brilliance. Absolute mental!!
4:10 no we havent had the struggles our English friends have had. The game will be 50/50, with the English having better players but we will hope for our team spirit to pull us through ❤
Credit for what?? Tedious football that has resulted is no silverware.
LOL I promise you the Dutch are hoping Kane STAYS on the team sheet, not vice versa.
You must remember France score nothing apart from a penalty. You don’t need strikers on the pitch to win but you do need a man who can be an out ball. Kane has not done his job to be that out ball, he hasn’t even won many balls in the air. In his last game he passed the ball 9 times in the game and didn’t even sprint in the box. Let me ask you a question if you had a world class goal keeper let 2 goals in a game would you keep him on the pitch?
Credit for almost getting put out against mediocre teams and scraping through somehow?
switzerland is way stronger then netherlands
England have had a easy run through on penalties multiple times . If england dont change managers for the world cup they will be playing the same football
Everyone has played a few games on FM24 and are clearly experts.. 😂
