Reaction from head coach Murat Yakin at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf on Saturday after his Switzerland side were knocked out of Euro 2024 by England at the quarter-final stage on penalties.

In a closely-fought match, Monaco forward Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead on 75 minutes, but Bukayo Saka of Arsenal equalised five minutes later and after the two teams could not be separated by extra time, it all came down to a shootout.

England went first and scored though Chelsea youngster Cole Palmer, then Switzerland’s Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford.

Yann Sommer could not prevent Jude Bellingham, Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold from converting their spot kicks and England won 5-3.

It was hard on Switzerland, who have still to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament.

They exit the European Championship on penalties in the last eight for the second time in a row after losing to Spain in similar fashion three years ago.

  1. Was a good game of football which unfortunately one team has to lose. When England went a goal down, I must admit, I thought they were finished.

  3. The actual game was boring as hell, it improved when England scored a goal.
The penalty shoot out was a master class by England who deserved to win.
Switzerland just played a ring fence around there goal to prevent England scoring a goal.

    4/10 lackluster game
    .

  4. A very good performance by the Swiss. Excellent tactics. Huge credit to Yakin. Very dignified in defeat. Wish him and Switzerland well going forwards.

  5. The Swiss were not better or in control. The had a bright period in the 2nd half the rest of the time they were chasing the ball. The also were not defending saka effectively as he got past to the byline line numerous times 🙄

  6. you did well you certainly didn't disappoint Switzerland , don't let a missed penalty get you down, especially as the English cheated, the mistake was to let a late lead slip like against Germany, there's room for improvement here for the team

  7. pens are not luck. Englands pen takers are way better. They'd win 9/10 pen shootouts against the swiss. Pickford done his research on where they shoot also

  8. Proud to have lost against a very poor performing England team? More like `bottled` a one off chance to reach the semis. Switzerland never should have let it slip. England on the other hand just getting big time lucky once again. ( Funny: when they bring on the subs.) And that luck will run out – and I hope it does as some players are very unsympathetic – if they don`t start to play the in-form players. Probably they will lose semis or final after playing their best game of the tournament, which would put things into perspective.

  9. We England have been so poor this tournament I was convinced we’d get beaten by the Swiss we are blagging it imo and have been lucky I’m starting to think that sometimes you are destined for glory.

  10. Switzerland were excellent this tournament. Brilliant watch from a neutral, and I even found myself supporting them during the Italy and England matches. They’re excellent, and I wish them the best of luck in the future ❤️ 🇨🇭
