Louis van Gaal said on Tuesday that Argentina’s key player Lionel Messi remains “the most dangerous and creative player” but says his Netherlands “will have opportunities” in their 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match.
van Gaal said The Oranje “have an account to settle” as they take on the Copa America champions for the first time since Maxi Rodríguez’s penalty eliminated the Netherlands at the semi-final stage of the 2014 edition in Brazil.
The two nations meet at the Lusail Stadium on Friday evening with a last four match against Croatia or Brazil awaiting the winner.
The 71-year-old was asked about tournament favourites Brazil, and responded by laughing that the South American side are “a small counter attacking team”.
