He has outperformed other managers on paper. It has been flukes or easy opposition that has enabled England to go far in the previous competitions. The only reason they beat Germany in the Knockouts last time out was because Germany was an absolute mess and then they had Ukrain and Denmark in the quarter and semi. They struggled to get passed teams they should easily beat like Colombia and Sweden.
On paper, it looks good but literally any semi-competent manager could have gotten them there. We have seen what Southgate was capable of before he got the England job and nothing there says he should have even been considered for it.
