UEFA EURO 2024™ Day 5: Ronaldo’s Portugal win but Messi still GOAT | screamers in Turkiye v Georgia

[Music] [Applause] Phil there’s only one place to start and it has to be turkey against Georgia I mean I don’t know maybe I’m overreacting but I’ve come away from that thinking that is the best game of the tournament thus far certainly the one that we’ve seen yeah no easily I think everybody’s everybody’s saying that like we’re very fortunate to have been at that game Mark cuz I’ve been on social media today looking at people’s reactions and everybody was watching that game game was just sort of whooping with delight at just what an exciting fixture it was and maybe it’s because it was unexpected because I’m going to be honest here um when we saw the fixture list and we saw the games that we were attending and I saw oh okay on the 18th we’ve got a turkey against Georgia not expecting too much from that 40th ranked team in the world against 75th ranked team in the world I’m going to hold my hand up though I was no no no no I was excited to see it because of the turkey support we said it we said it it’s to be an amazing atmosphere and that didn’t let us down that that didn’t let us down but sure so from a sort of like the perspective of going to an exciting uh uh crowd sure you know I knew it was going to be there are uh around 5 to six million people with Turkish Heritage in uh Germany two million of those live in and around the dortman area so we knew that there was going to be a tremendous atmosphere what I didn’t expect it was to be such a genuinely thrilling game and it’s honestly one of the most I don’t even know how to put this into words like exuberant thrilling exciting adrenaline pumped footballing experiences I’ve ever had in my life because there’s one thing is the atmosphere which was Sensational ludicrously loud just intense raw like there was a little Edge to it as well there were it was everything and then the game itself which was end to end thrilling just yeah it was it was a fantastic game we’re talking about it we haven’t watched the highlights you know what’s happened it was great wasn’t it and I actually say you have to watch the extended highlights the 20 minute Min match you can’t you no seriously there’s not enough there’s not enough time in the 3 minute previews to actually be able to watch it so my my what I was trying to think of was did we enjoy it so much because we weren’t expecting that much no but I think I just think it was end to end it was everything yeah so it was the weather it was pouring down in each corner of the stadium and football is better in the rain and you thought that hang on will this game actually go ahead yes yeah yeah yeah because there was that much water I don’t remember seeing game maybe in Thailand when I’ve played before but never in Europe yes um and and then all of a sudden it stopped the water drained away and they came out and it was like brilliant conditions like you said in the wet the ball Zips around incredibly the atmosphere there was a bit of ARG bargy going on before the game began the Turkish and the Georgia fans got together a little bit there was nothing too extreme there was some things thrown and there was a few punches thrown but nothing too bad the police were there maybe their Leisure a little bit yes they did take a little bit of time but once they arrived that was it that was it was it wasn’t like a minus schu of any issues in the stadium whatsoever and that kind of added to it all didn’t it we fans above us yes we had a mixture of Georg Georgian and Turkish fans in front of us yes we had the odd beer shower throughout the game yeah that that seems to be a running uh theme because the night before France Austria we had Austrian fans throwing uh stuff at killing mbappe didn’t reach mbappe reached us a little bit didn’t reach mbappe so yeah people people have been getting a little bit too too exuberant but yeah shout out to Georgia for many many reasons firstly because we are talking about a very small country uh in Europe it is the first time that they’ve ever reached a any major tournament and first goal obviously first goal and in this first game they performed so much higher than my expectation levels because I paid quite close attention to the um to their qualifying campaign because they were in the same camp Oh did they not gree out did they well that was later they were in the same group of Spain they got absolutely smashed by Spain Spain beat them 71 in the first game and then put another three goals past them in the second game they finished behind Spain Scotland and Norway in their group and they’re only here because they came through the Nations League uh path beating Luxembourg and then knocking out Greece see that tells you penalties that the the the whole going through the Nations league is actually a good thing because we get the opportunity to see a team like a nation like Georgia play at the European championship and we wouldn’t have had the game that we had had they have not been here through the Nations league and I just thought it was just such a the word brave is patronizing I think but they absolutely went for it and the fans did as well the fans were wildly outnumbered they weren’t intimidated they weren’t threatened they weren’t coward they were very very very noisy and it’s just under 2,000 miles from the capital of Georgia to Dortmund right 2,000 miles that’s a long way and there were thousands and thousands of Georgians uh in the in the in the stadium okay they were completely outnumbered by the Turks and I’ve I’ve never seen anything like this we said this the other day with Croatia didn’t we we said the croatians turned up and I’d never seen anything like that I’ve never maybe there were more croatians in this Olympic stadion in in Berlin because it’s a bigger Stadium but they weren’t louder than these these Turkish you didn’t have the the the the Acoustics as you do Inman Stadium because it was like honestly my ears are still ringing from tonight and genuinely I mean when when Georgia had the ball the whistles were so loud from the Turkish fans let’s talk about the game itself because Moulder scored the first goal for turkey and what a finish that was I mean Georgia I feel a little bit for him they defended it well clearance from the defender heads it good distance away from goal it pops up molda on the volley yes well this is the thing that we’re talking about Georgia because you know we we can go into details about the performance but they had numerous chances to score numerous chances and they really really should have taken them they hit the woodwork they had really good openings maybe with a bit more um calmness in front of go maybe experience who knows they would have taken that but the two goals they conceded are absolute screamers as well absolute screamers that normally normally do not go in normally they don’t go in so they had chances to score many chances to score and the two goals they conceded were absolute worldy so that just gives you an idea of how unate and Georgia has one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga right Mama Dash know Georg Mama Das I don’t think he’s going to be in La Liga next season he’s almost certainly going to be in the Premier League and quite possibly with with Newcastle United fantastic goalkeeper he’s huge he’s really intimidating and he was he was beaten by two incredible strikes Wonder goals you mentioned the second one there that two strikes Gula we were talking just before he struck that ball he’s had a bad game I’m I’m really glad we weren’t commentating this game because people would have really slagged us off but we were obviously I you know I work in Spain I’ve seen a I was going to say I’ve seen a lot of igula I haven’t seen a lot of igula because no one’s seen a lot of arula in Spain because he’s only played 10 games for Real Madrid but I was keeping a close eye on him and and it felt like the game was passing him by he wasn’t getting involved he didn’t have too many touches when he did get the ball he tried to maybe overcook it a little bit tried to go for dribbles when he really shouldn’t have done it but then he pulls out this incredible this incredible shot and this incredible goal he has this Aura of quality that special players do and um don’t want to Big him up too much he’s only 19 he’s played 10 League games for Real Madrid scored six goals but there is something special about this kid even though it wasn’t his best game 3-1 to Turkey they score a breakaway goal to make it 3-1 I mean it’s a bit silly really when you think about it Mama dashly goes up for a corner they’re down 2-1 the opening game of European championships is that naivity well so I was asking you about this because listen there’s two things either you you send the goalkeeper up and you know you can get a you could get a win the goalkeeper could score the winning goal it’s unlikely that doesn’t often happen at all or you could get caught on the Counterattack and concede a goal and in these European championships keep going on about this but in these European championships every goal counts because third place can go through in the group and most third place teams are going to have three points so how are they’re going to be decided through goal difference so literally every goal counts so I’ll just in the back of mine when I was seeing madash go up I was thinking oh maybe maybe that’s not wise because every goal counts and yeah they got caught up because they um got caught with the break open goal and a third goal time for where one or lost thanks to tab at what point do you think the game was one or lost today I think the interesting part of the game was when turkey scored a second goal and they were going to be two nil up uh really quickly after scoring the first goal and it was a very very very tight decision from the VAR which had disallowed that that game that that that that that moment changed it that was when Georgia got back into it you could feel the fans pushing Georgia on and they um they got back into it and and made a real game of it because at that point I felt like turkey were potentially going to steamroll of them because they made a much better start so maybe that wasn’t where it was one and loss because turkey went on to win to win the game but that was when the game became an actual game became an actual competitive match because I think if Turkey had got that second goal the momentum was so strong with them that the noise in the stadium was so incredible and Georgia were a little bit coward their first game on the back foot uh so that was a really important one moment for me it’s AR gul’s goal 2-1 yeah it breaks the hearts of Georgia the players yeah they had so many chances after you could see the reaction though you can see the reaction that time in the game they threw everything at it right and you’re right they did and they could have scored a number of goals afterwards and there would have been contenders probably for goals of the of of the the tournament because they were unbelievable movement of play just the final finish let them down but I think it was that moment arula who didn’t we don’t we both agree we didn’t think he was that great today he could have played a lot better didn’t kind of work for him today but he scores an absolute wonder goal which was phenomenal it starts outside the line of the post and curls into that far post it was absolutely amazing plenty more coming up tonight and the tap app has see the first half we were traveling back from Dortmund back to our hotel on the outskirts of dorf and but we did get a chance to sit down and watch the second half or certainly the most the most of the second half not necessarily the entirety of it but the most of it we saw the goals we saw both of the goal all three goals sorry and uh it was a very competitive game um from what we saw in the second half certainly it was a sort of a disappointing sort of performance from Portugal but really I thought I thought C public held their own and did really well yeah I mean you know we missed the first half but it was the uh the first goalless first half of the tournament so maybe we didn’t miss too much as I think we timed that very very very well I have to say we we’ve had loads of early goals it was a shock though City C Republic go one up yeah and another beautiful hit another goal from outside the area we’ve got a very high percentage of goals that have been scored from outside the area in this tournament so non-stop bangers at Euro 2024 and then Portugal showed their extra quality never gave up yes got a bit fortunate with their equalizer but it you know it’s the positional play it’s it’s the pressure they applied on the Czech Republic they forced a kind of half an error confusion and it’s the goalkeeper doesn’t do that well with the save parries it onto his own Defender ends up in the back of his net so you’re talking about the winning goal which came in stoppage time 2 minutes after Portugal had had a goal ruled out which they thought was going to be the winner for a very very marginal offside decision against Cristiano Ronaldo very very marable but but but correct and that that shows tremendous character to come back from the blow of thinking that you’ve won it in the 89th minute you haven’t won it and then you do go and win it in the 92nd minute and we saw it fulltime the Jubilation of Cristiano Ronaldo and the other Portuguese players they knew exactly what this meant they knew exactly there’s pressure on this team there is pressure on this team because a lot of people think this is the best Squad of players in the tournament I tipped them I’ve tipped them to win the Euros and you and many other people because the squad the level of quality the level of strength in depth that they have is really almost unmatched by anyone but I we we’ve seen this at this at this Euros who’s who’s struggled in these first round of matches because we’ve seen all the major teams Germany beat beat 10-man Scotland comfortably okay Spain beat Croatia 3-0 but it wasn’t that comfortable I mean it wasn’t a true reflection of the game England beat Serbia 1 nil France we were at France France squeezed past Austria Italy Albania Italy had to come from behind against Albania Netherlands had to come from behind against Poland what did Belgium do Belgium lost so you know all teams that are ranked higher and potentially favored have struggled in these first round of games pretty much but more often than not the teams that go on and Win It are the teams that do slowly start and find their way into the tournament right yes doesn’t really generally end up being the one that actually eats the ground running and is flying from game one right yeah unless it’s Greece in 2004 but they didn’t really either let’s be honest cuz no one actually even took notice of them until they got to the final but even in the final no really gave him a chance either that’s another podcast all together um I think I have to mention it’s the weekend of the goat yes coming up on opta sport this coming weekend we’ve got L Messi making his appearance uh in the cop of America which is the goat the okay for the first game against Canada of the America yes and then on Sunday morning Australian time um we’ve got Ronaldo turning up and playing for Portugal of course they’ve got a game against turkey which we’re going to be at it’s going to be amazing I want to start the debate right now I want to ask the question no no no listen we listen it’s it’s very late no no no no no Messi or Ronaldo okay well there’s no debate for Messi obviously obviously obviously why well just cuz he’s just infinitely more talented in every aspect of footb but there’s an argument there’s A’s there’s there’s an opposing argument to that one and I think there’s a valid argument to it because yes okay you you can look at the numbers you can look at appearances goals they they they’re there or their abouts right they’re similar I mean forget the balandor in my opinion because I think the balandor is not a real true reflection because it’s the way it’s judged is a bit of a joke I have to put my hand up and say that I think the Bor is a bit of a joke in the way it’s voted for however what I will say is Ronaldo’s evolution of Cristiano Ronaldo is actually more impressive than Messi’s in my opinion starting off as a Winger they’re not necessarily having the ability to get pass plays run past plays evolving into that out andout Striker becoming even more prolific as a goal scorer than he was before so the evolution of Cristiano Ronaldo in my opinion is more impressive but I’m not saying he’s the goat ahead of Messi Okay but well the evolution of lonel Messi is also pretty impressive from an out and out Winger into someone who plays a little bit out Winger though well someone who played on the wing and took a lot of people on and dribbled amily and he just moved side and still dribbled and took a lot of people so what I’m saying is I don’t think his game changed as much and maybe because maybe because physically to maintain that level no he drops DEA plays more centrally can play play more passes rather than dribble and take 25 people on I think they both have evolved into different ways I think they were both at different starting points I think naturally lonel Messi is an infinitely more gifted player than almost anyone who’s ever touched a football in the history of humanity Cristiano Ronaldo worked unbelievably hard had the just insane mentality to keep working keep focused keep relentlessly trying to improve and he did and he’s become one of the best footballers of all time and his numbers are ridiculous and what he’ve achieved is ridiculous and his consistency is almost unsurpassed but it still doesn’t make him a better footballer than Lionel Messi because nobody’s a better football at a little messy because what he’s done the consistent level that he has well he did because you know he’s a bit old now but him and Ronaldo at a very high level for a very very very long time and that is something that we won’t see again we won’t see that again because I don’t think we’re going to see mbappe or Harland or Vinnie Jr or any of these new kids coming through consistently be ludicrously good for 10 15 years I just don’t can’t see that happening and that’s why Messi is clear so you’re saying that Messi is the goat yes I am yes yes I’ve said it before you know this you know this no no but it’s just an interesting discussion that it will go on forever and ever and ever because I think there’s different look ways of looking at it and and I’m I’m I’m I’m torn really and I I would probably I I would have to probably agree with you and I think that L Messi is the goat I think so and I agree with what you’re saying in terms of ability natural ability working with it the free flowing kind of football that he is is more appealing to me but I do really admire the evolution of chistian Ronaldo great yeah no no no no one said otherwise but you know if we’re talking about the greatest of all time there can only be one so opto sport podcast listeners please let’s start this debate let’s ask this question who is the goat I mean it’s been asked many times before but ask what who is the goat and why is he the goat um personally I think Pelle is the goat but we’re not he’s not in this discussion no I’ve I’ve got I’ve got nothing to say about Pelle in this discussion this is lonel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo so I mean P’s won you know three World Cups that’s all I’m going to say anyway well you know what that’s all we
