Euro 2024: Jamie Carragher expresses his concerns over England’s defensive depth

more England now and Jamie carer believes Trent Alexander Arnold’s passing ability means that he has to start against Serbia tonight Liverpool Defender is expected to line up in Midfield although Roy Keane and Gary El have questioned that decision among other pundits carer though played down those fears I just think Trent is that good a player you’ve got find a place for him in the team and and you know that happens at different levels of football you know you know sometimes you know someone’s got that much quality you can’t have that sitting on the bed and England have a big hole in Midfield now Trent is a people say he’s not a Midfield player but he’s 50% of Midfield player he plays in Midfield when Liverpool have the ball we know lots of teams do that now where you know the fullback goes into to Midfield so and what you’ve got to understand is International Football is almost like a completely different sport to Premier League Football you know the pace of the game was so much slower and I think that helps Trent and I just think his quality on the ball I I just think has to be in that team and listen I don’t agree with the guys I know Roy and Gary mentioned something last night and know Wayne Rooney in the last few days has questioned Trent’s defensive capabilities now I I’ve been a Critic of Trent in terms of his One V one defending when he’s played at right back when you play in Midfield you don’t get that you know so when they’re saying defensively be R to stret I don’t see that in Midfield there’s that many bodies and and people don’t run with the ball in the center of the pitch it’s not only a passing area of the pitch so I’ve got no worries about him defensively you know he might lose a runner something like that but any Midfield player can do that so I think he’s in there because we have a lack of quality in there but his his passing rage has to be in this team mark gay is expected to partner Jon stones at Center back and Carri is concerned about England’s defensive depth that’s a woody it is a woody uh but but it is what it is you know at different times you have an abundance of players in certain positions and other times you don’t to me for so long when I when I was playing it was we haven’t got a left wing guy now you could name probably four or five players now who could play left wing for England and you think they do a really good job you know so there always going to be one position where we struggle obious we know right back we got a lot of lot of those at the moment so I think we for a while now we’ve struggled at a center back and I think that Partnership of stones and Maguire has been fantastic for England but Harry McGuire’s out Jon Stones you can never be 100% sure he’s going to sort of be there for you every game in terms of Fitness he came off the last internationally you know he probably plays about 25 30 Games a season for Man City so he’s not a guy who regularly plays 50 games a season so it is a big worry because the other lads who were in there are good players without being great players and that’s not a criticism you know they don’t play for teams at the top end of the table H dun I really like and gy I really like as well really good solid Premier League Defenders uh but the probably not Champions League or International class Defenders yet because we you know we haven’t seen them in in this Arena too much so it looks like guy is going to get the nod and I hope he does really well you know really do as a Young play done really well Crystal Palace being brave to move from Chelsea I think it was so you know he’s been given his head through through a few injuries so you know good luck to the lad this will be G southgate’s fourth major tournament as England manager despite lots of positive results good runs he’s yet to get England Over The Line so if he fails to win this Euros should his Reign come to an end I always think it’s difficult to sort to say if a manager doesn’t win he’s got to go in terms of a knockout competition I understand that if it was maybe a league format and a manager would be manager you know three or four years and you think but he’s got to win the league now but I know how competition can just go against you with a referee in decision a Miss penalty going out on penalties a red card so there’s there’s so much Jeopardy in it that I think it’s difficult to say that but listen I think we expect a good you know really at least semifinals and and if you go out in glory you know I don’t think too many people will be too critical but I think England have to go really close and then you just need that little bit of Lu to try and get you over the line Cara’s last major tournament as England player was the 2010 World Cup so what’s it like now watching England as a fan to be honest I didn’t play that much H so really so I mean yeah to be there listen yeah you know I’ll watch it tonight I won’t get to car I go the pub and I know it’s Father’s day but H I’ll be watching it with my dad and in his I’ll go around to his and watch it we’re getting a maybe watch it with a few bevies and hopefully we’ll celebrate you mentioned a few bevies I know you had a brilliant time in in Dortmund recently apparently England could be there they win the group get to the semi-finals fany going back out and start playing the yellow wall again well if they make the yellow wall I’ll get over there I’ve got to be there haven’t I will make sure of it what what’s your favorite song before you go Jamie your England song your football song there any then oh oh the ban Skinner that’s the only one is it good ones oh the John Barnes one as well there’s only two there them two [Music]

  1. we should show England that we are with them all the way together, you'll never walk alone 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽💪🤞🍀❤️

  2. Thats why I hope we have Wharton in midfield, especially in the big games. We're getting ran thru if it's Rice, Bellingham, Foden or Rice, Trent, Bellingham.

  3. Feel like all of this Trent debacle is all just a media wind up to drag as many stories and dramas out of the competition.

Trent didn’t have much or if any defensive mishaps last season where he played a lot in midfield, and Liverpool were on top of the league up until him and a few other players got injured. Making a big story out of nothing, if this was a few years ago I’d understand.

  4. All we want to see is an attack mindset.
Just go for it. No slow sideways anf backwards passing.
We know our defence is ropey so thats even more reason to attack, goals win games

  5. Listen most tournaments we've been strong defensively and been sent home packing, our depth now is forward areas, it's time for us to score goals, Manchester United under fergie, Klopp at Liverpool you only have to see the opening few games of this tournament to realise that, sitting back playing the safe game only hinders you, Scotland, Croatia and Albania all setout to contain and got battered but then looked more comfortable playing positively not so much Scotland but you know what I mean, it's time to stop this negativity around our defence and put belief init! do you think any war in the past was fought by being negative to the front lines going into battle? it's why we fail as a nation every single tournament because we don't know how to utilise our players and get that extra 10 or 20% out of them when it counts! Italians and Germans are masters of this! stop the F negativity and install a confidence and belief like there's no issues!! use and go with what you got!!!

  6. All of the sky stories on here seem to have negative headlines when it’s about England. First it’s negativity about Trent, now it’s negativity about our defence. Cheer up sky and create some positivity around the team instead of forcing us to watch this miserable stuff

  7. He is right. But it's not important in this match. Serbian team have only one player, Tadić, who is important, but he has 36 year. So Mitrović or Tadić will be isolated if they stop him. Serbian team is in big crises last couple of years. Old, uncreative, confusing, predictable and slow. In Serbia is generally depressive atmosphere about this tournament.

  8. Oh wow, why am i not surprised, nevile keane and fat rooney all have a major chip on their shoulder about trent 😂 i wonder if it has anything to do with them being ex Manchester United. What a set of muppets

  9. I'm calling Southgate now, his best 11 is obviously as follows!

    ————– Pickford ————–
    TAA Walker Stones Gomez
    ——— Rice — Bellingham —
    — Saka — Palmer — Foden —
    —————- Kane —————-

Trent to be inverted, leaving Walker on the right of a three.

  10. Pirlo, Scholes, Xavi, Alonso, Modric…none of them were great defenders. They are great passers so you play them midfield next to a good DM and let.tll them dictate the play. Trent can do that kind of job. He's actually better defensively than any of those greats mentioned above, and as good with the ball at his feet.

  11. Carra on Sky & Gary Neville on ITV & Henry Winter on Talk Radio all spot on, in saying Trent is a truly world-class passer like Pirlo & Hoddle.

Jude, Foden, Harry & Saka have been banging Gareths door as they need Trents (Pirlo/Hoddle like) brave passes to unlock the best defences.

GOAT Boss Clough said he spoke with Sir Alf & both agreed they wuda won 1986 & 1990 World Cups by playing Bryan Robson, Hoddle, John Barnes & Gazza in midfield w Robson as the pivot & Hoddle in Trents position on the right.

Bobby Robson would not play Bryan Robson & Hoddle together & he also over trained them & sadly increased risk of Bryan Robson & Barnes & Hoddle getting re-injured.

Have a think about that. Both Clough & Sir Alf wuda taken age 19 Gazza to Mexico 1986 & built the team around Hoddles beautiful passing on the right. They wuda told Bryan Robson, "You're not surging up top, you're gonna play the John McGovern pivot role & give the ball to Hoddle first, if not possible, then to Barnes & Gazza."

This info is on the Maths Profs site at UKRGMP. They are very happy with Gareths squad & say don't waste Trents world class passing skills like Sir Bobby wasted Hoddles talent by trying to get em all fit for game 1. Clough said he wuda got em fit for the KO games by resting them.

That's why bosses matter more than players.

It's hard to believe the FA would not choose Clough or that they sacked Sir Alf after England failed to score from 30 goal attempts vs. Poland & missed the 1974 World Cup. (Bosses not to blame if the team miss sitters).

The Profs really like Gareths decision making & think he has evolved into Sir Alf 2.0
