Yesterday I was playing around with trying to create a schedule where: (1) each team plays twice again teams in their own pot, (2) each team only place once per matchweek, and (3) each team doesn’t end up playing the same team in a pot home and away. And though I have some experience with scheduling, I was struggling massively. And I wasn’t even doing it randomly. I was just trying to find one set of fixtures that worked for all the criteria I listed.

Anyone have any ideas on process/algorithm they’ll use for determining fixtures? Thanks

EDIT- Couple days later, found this from ESPN. Turns out it's going to be done by a supercomputer, and not fully by hand anymore. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/39714659/uefa-computerise-champions-league-draw-next-season

What specifically is so difficult? Just avoid teams from the same association, 2 per pot. Italy may have 1/6 of the spots but that is easily worked around. There could be some teams that play 2 teams from the same association from different pots.
