  1. Man, Tom, please don’t be denigrating about the UK and racism.

We’re consistently in the top 3 for least racist countries in the world.

Of course, there are always outliers who can’t accept people of others races or ethnicities, and some could argue that their views are influenced by certain factors we are exposed to as a country (whether reported on or not), but they represent a tiny minority.

Loving the content other than that little niggle. ā¤

  2. I think there’s this thing with all types of vice. I’m ok with this level , but not ok with something I think is a few rungs up the ladder. A bit of wine might be fine, but maybe someone passes on the scotch whisky. A bit of prize play might be fine, but maybe someone passes on the sports betting.

That framework might help a bit. All or nothing, non nuanced, takes almost always abandon the in-between reality of everyday life.

So, it is possible to support a ā€˜ban’ on the betting companies (shirts, adverts, etc) simply because of the consequences the players might face (for betting on their sport). It’s ok to then turn around and maybe use those services. Or turn around and do a prizes competition. Or turn around and do a lottery game. It’s an interesting conversation.

  3. The difference with betting and the lottery is all around the dangers of addiction. It's much easier to get addicted to gambling and not know where to draw the line. It's much harder to get addicted to something like the lottery. You're not risking so much because the costs are so much lower. There's a strong link with addiction and the thrill of risk-taking that's worth exploring.

  4. With respect Tom I fear You have missed the point. Addiction is a mental affliction. One I will take to my grave. It has a worse side. The blessed unaffected don`t really think it`s a thing. I`ve been clean some Years now, I learned coping mechanism`s for my "trigger`s". I dare not imagine if my addiction manifested itself in gambling. Said trigger`s on my Hero`s shirt`s would cripple Me!!!!

  5. Liverpools low net spend is also based on a few high profile outgoings like coutinho

And the net spend merchants never want to bring up wages + agent fees into their debates

  6. I actually rhink we shoyld sign the type of striker who can also play as a winger, and a 6 who can also be an 8. I would bring Gyokeres and Zubimendi. Both first team ready and dont break the bank

  7. The difference between betting raffles/lotteries is with betting on outcomes of games a person has a part to play in the outcome. With that the human physiology tends to trend toward thinking they can affect change through more effort, cheating, or just doing more to change the odds. With raffles and lottery your ability to affect outcomes is minimal with more purchases of opportunities and without criminal activity impossible to achieve an outcome based on cheating or any other negative traits.

  8. Tom, on the issue of the lottery vs sports betting punishments for players—it seems to me that your issue isn’t with sports betting in general. The issue is the moral discrepancy of inundating players with the idea of sports betting being a part of the game, down to the sponsors on their shirt, then punishing them harshly for any involvement in it. At the same time, sports betting companies are profiting from the relationship and monetizing the players. It seems an unfair temptation and I agree with your opinion that it is different from the lottery or prize drawings.

I think an analogous example would be a U-18s team being sponsored by Heineken and then punishing the kids harshly if they were caught underage drinking.

  9. Really interesting talk on gambling. My take is FP essentially is a form of gambling (although low level). If you’re paying for goods/services that isn’t guaranteed to you – it’s gambling. Betting is slightly different but they do live on the same road.

  10. people should remember there was a time in the recent past where you couldnt give your tickets away when they talk about increasing to capacity of the stadium to solve the problem of getting a ticket

  11. We should go for Yosuf Fofana who is in his last year of contract, pedro Neto as Saka backup can work as well because he wont be playing all the time so his injuries can be managed. Get a young CB so we dont have to pay to much, get zubemendi as DM as well. this leaves us with enough money to get that one Marque signing that should be striker now my preference is Isak but Victor G or Osimen will do great. Dont want Sesko and wait for 3 years for him to come good.

  12. Rice is not a good 6 when it comes to progressing ball, he hugs the bakl too long and mostly passes sideways. I think he has excelled at left 8 keep him there and get Zubemendi. I would keep partey for one last year as he wont fetch us too much in transfer market anyways and can be used as back to zubemendi or can come in bigger games if zubemendi struggles to blend in the first season.

  13. Arsenal should look at increasing stadium capacity, we have the fan base and that will be increase our revenue. Aim for 70k to 74k seat stadium.

  14. Betting and raffles are very similar but different.
I’ve never placed a bet in my life, never played a fruit machine but I have played online poker on and off over the years but never put a lot of money into it, like Ā£5-Ā£10 over many month’s. I think there is a huge problem with betting advertisement as it’s absolutely everywhere and and at all times of the day.

  15. Hi ton watch your show at 8, was good as always. Got some thought's on gambling. I work in a betting shop I see first hand how the addiction of betting affects people, I subscribe to your chats got into football prizes and found I got a bit addicted to it, I have now stopped. As any form of gambling
can get addictive. But I like you think this a form of raffle all the same, I love your balanced views, one thing id love you to promote next season champions games to get them all red like dortmund do in yellow, I think it increases the atmosphere. Thanks kevin

  16. So man united in their two worst season went away with 2 cups, while we are still making excuses about squad depth, Pep and catchup money. How can any one justify not winning cups like UEFA cup, Carabao and FA cup. Liverpool and united both have won multiple trophies in Pep's era but we have lifted the best excuse & process trophy. Not blaming Arteta for league or CL because the team faught but to keep throwing domestic cups and UEFA cup in bin and then fan making exucuses like squad depth & no one cares about domestic cup is just unacceptable. The fans who disrespect the domestic cups are just dumb, they dont know they are actually rejecting & putting mud on their own club history because we have the most FA cups.

  17. Morning Tom! Memorial Day (3 day) weekend here.

Had a friend post a meme on Facebook at 8:00, before I had my coffee, about the search (currently in its infancy) for ā€œthe hard questionā€. Do you by chance have any insight into the study of consciousness. If you happen to know Roger Penrose of Oxford you must have some theories. šŸ˜šŸ„“šŸ˜€

  18. That's wrong Tom, The Emirates was built as an 80000 seater stadium but the club chose to use wider seats for fan comfort. It wouldn't be difficult to add a few thousand extra seats. However the club have stuck with the wider seats.

  19. The insane level of gambling advertising during sport, and punditry of sport, has an overwhelming exposure to children which raffles/lotteries do not. The association between betting on sport and enjoying sport is a gateway that needs to be removed. I imagine players with gambling addictions would come from their outside environments and not directly related to advertising in football although I can see where it can create temptation for addicts. The culture of betting in sport and its effects on children is the bigger issue for me and would prefer sport in general was rid of it.

  20. Anyone who's actually interested in the moral quandaries posed by betting company sponsorship should read/listen to Philip Auclair and JosimarFootball. One of the best resources on one of the seediest underbellies of modern sport.

  21. Tom im an Arsenal Supporter from Australia I've been so from the Seventies . I would love to go to the Emerates . Good Luck to those people who can go to Games a bit Jelious . English or from Overseas.

  22. Players/staff can have direct influence in games and are compensated well for their professional involvement in the game. I’m wondering legally if it’s in their contracts if betting is prohibited. If so then it’s simple. As for lottery vs betting, it’s a choice and to generalize what is right for masses is impossible. The only criticism I have about football prizes it’s UK only, love the show and as a foreign listener it does suck that I can’t participate in that. I am for sure not saying that you are xenophobic, you are the opposite, but that would be my only critique of football prizes. Look forward to supporting you and all the great content creators that you collaborate with. COYG!!!

  23. Listened on catch up and came to comment re. Gambling issue. I'm very anti-betting, but do think there is a difference with a raffle/lottery if there is a limited number of tickets (and therefore money to lose) with a defined prize. With betting, your losses are unlimited, and your return more opaque. I think both could be problematic to somebody with addiction, but if you have an addiction you'll be drawn towards the more dangerous option.

Should we ban tombolas at school fetes?
