[Anthony Joseph] UPDATE: Celtic midfielder Daniel Kelly has knocked back an initial contract offer from the club, but remains in talks over a new deal. Both parties are still keen to agree terms. His current deal expires on Dec 31 & he could enter pre-contract talks with other clubs in July.

  1. Could be worse. If both parties want it, then I assume from Kelly’s POV, he wants a guarantee of some game time and integration into the first team squad. Most of these boys want to play for Celtic but you just have to look at what’s happened to other players in his shoes (Doak, Vata, Karamoko etc.) to see that unless there is a real push to use our youth players instead of buying projects in the hopes they will turn out good, it’s no worth gambling your career on.

We gave Kelly a run out and he looked decent, even scored a goal. Now he can’t make the bench. If I was him I’d be rejecting a contract also.

Rangers and Celtic are woeful at implementing youth players, it’s no surprise most end up leaving. Doesn’t stop us sniffing around other teams promising youth and then sticking them on the bench though.

He’s 6th choice midfielder. He’s unlucky that his run just coincides with Hatate coming back into the fold.

I don’t think we’ll sign Bernardo in the summer and MOR is gone so I would hope we’ll get Lawall and Kelly game time in preseason to fully assess them.

of our current squad, only McGregor is a youth product who’s now a regular first teamer, with Forrest, Welsh and Ralston as backups. Any youth player with a brain is going to look elsewhere instead of rotting here

Its down to money not play time with these kids btw, rightly so as well. Not that the play time offered is great either

If it’s currently something like: McGregor, Hatate, O’Riley and then: Bernardo, Iwata, Holm, then Kelly is probably next alongside Summers when he comes back from loan.

A lot depends on Bernardo. If he’s O’Riley’s replacement essentially, we would have McGregor, Hatate, Bernardo, and then: Iwata, Holm, Kelly. With Summers the 7th guy. I’d also like us to consider Lennon Miller as well but know he might have interest from England that trumps our interest.

Either way, I think Holm and Kelly would both benefit from loans in the Premiership with the aim of playing 30+ games. Then for the season after (25/26) if Hatate goes you’d have Kelly and Holm to add into a slowing down McGregor, Bernardo in his second full time year (and probably last if we continue trend of selling an asset each season) and Iwata and Summers.

I guess one of the issues is convincing a player that this is the plan and making sure it stays the plan in case there is a change in manager etc. it also doesn’t take into account form or injury. But that’s the pathway I’d be advocating for Kelly and Holm really.
