He has developed quite well in Tottenham. Before moving there he had a tendency to play very narrowly through the middle, often short passes to fellow teammates who were under pressure. Him being a bit more defensive and distributing the ball more widely has really made a difference. Mourinho really did well schooling him to be a more classic CDM after he signed for Spurs.
