The USMNT seems to never perform to it’s potential under Berhalter. However, is Gregg Berhalter really the problem or are the players overhyped?
Today we will debate Joe Lowery from the Total Soccer Show on this topic.

This joe guy, pretending Jamaica played a low block, did he even watch the game? 😂
Man city is much better at breaking down a low block than Liverpool ffs
It's really not a hard concept. Our players consistently play at a considerably lower level when they come to the national team than they do at their clubs. Obviously outside of the few national teams that recruit from a handful of clubs, this is to be expected to some extent. However, we see this to a greater degree than most national teams.
If you truly want to evaluate what expectations should be, just compare the outcomes of our national team when we had a considerably worse selection of players compared to todays team. We are currently not going above and beyond those outcomes when our talent pool is SIGNIFICANTLY better. There's one key variable in this equation that needs to be evaluated in order to tell the whole story.
The team looked best in 2023 nations League. not coach by Berhalter. So imo any can do as well and many probably better, but you dont want to take a chance because you love your gold cup tropheys and the rest of us want international success, not beating up on some small island countries and some serious third world countries. You are the typical American fan and the problem with soccer in America
This issue with USMNT and Berhalter influence is their collective age
The core of this team is so young they're still learning how to play and be valled up apart from disagreeing with managerial tactics
how about hiring coach who played high pressing football instead ?
with current usmnt roster, high press football probably gonna work well
Joe Lowery is boring.
Beating the worst generation of Mexico is not something you really want to flex
There is absolutely 0 doubt in my mind that both Tab Ramos and Pellegrino Matarazzo would be better
Berhalter is terrible, but not all the blame falls on him, our federation is equally subpar.
Can’t believe this guy got a job with the athletic, was just blatantly wrong multiple times
Joe’s best point was perhaps that this team loves to come in as an underdog scrap. I believe they’d do that against a clearly outmatched team like England, Brazil, or Netherlands. Germany and Netherlands were two counter examples where they let the USMNt have the ball for a half and more or less observe the game and make halftime adjustments (which Gregg didn’t do). But on the dual nat point: even if we credit Gregg with that, going forward, who is Gregg going to recruit that can make a difference on our squad? At this point, a starter level talent who has a passport for a proper football country would likely try to hold out for their other country. Maybe the scraps from Brazil, France, or England could do something for our squad.. but those are countries with relatively few dual nats.
Gregg is the issue these players are good enough to dominate concacaf and can’t
Joe’s response on the coach is so apathetic. Who are we going to get that’s better? You don’t know until you take risks and find out. It could be worse, but you dont know till you try. We are hosting a World Cup. Take the risk and be ambitious. We have NOTHING to lose. Only in soccer in the USA does this happen. We need to have standards and apathy does not create standards
Look. All this talk about tactics. Berhalter knows tactics, but high school soccer coaches know tactics. So what? Still, he is the embodiment of Mike Tyson's quote: “Everyone has a plan: until they get punched in the face." Don't want to take my word for it? Fine, take a much more respected manager's word for it: Speaking to reporters after the match, Van Gaal said: "Team USA didn't adjust, they didn't adapt. We based a tactical plan on that (targeting the flanks) that probably allowed us to win." He consistently makes the wrong picks. He has players out of position. And on, and on. Let that be the end of the discussion about Berhalter's tactics. He's not a high level tactician full stop.
My biggest beef, though, is actually his management of the team off the field. I don't think, despite the facade, that the players have bought into what Berhalter is doing, at all. You can see in the body language. You can see it manifested in their attitude and energy on the field against pretty much any other opponent besides Mexico. He doesn't relate to his players well. He's had multiple soap opera episodes with different players. Yes, there are others to blame in those scenarios, but he GETS PAID MILLIONS TO KNOW HOW TO MANAGE THESE THINGS.
If I could sum it up the best, we could really use a similar manager to who Phil Jackson was in the NBA, or Bill Belichick in the NFL. These guys are not just coaches. They are managers.
This guy argues that we don’t have the “lockpickers” besides maybe Gio but yet much lesser usmnt teams have punched above their weights. Our whole team atp plays in Europe, but almost every usmnt team that came before this generations team has had success, when has Gregg ever done that.
It’s fairly simple, this is the best talent pool the usmnt has ever had but it’s not the best performances we’ve had
The system put by Gregg handcuffs the player's abilities to perform at a higher level as a team. Case in point… BJ and Hudson had the US team play in a much free flowing way that yielded good results with good offense (no stagnation), good defense. As soon as Gregg came back with his system, things clearly regressed. Coaching IS a big part of how the team runs/functions and there are coaches that position the players to punch above their weight.
Joe's argument is made null by the simple fact that very good coaches exist at all. Seems that Joe almost thinks that any team could go without a coach and just play and that with their abilities they could go far on their own. That's ridiculous. Good coaches manage personalities, and allow their players to maximize their abilities as opposed to setting a system and jamming it down their throats.
Common Tactical Manager viewer comment – GrEggGg bAddD
Realistic viewer – We are severely overrating our talent, but that doesn’t mean they’re bad. Look at the total minutes played by nationality in the big 5 European leagues this season. USA ranks….26th. We’re behind the likes of: Mali, Ivory Coast, Colombia, Sweden, Austria, Poland, and Ireland.
If our team was as amazing as we say we are, surely they’d be getting more minutes at club level, no? The truth is we have several high performing players: Pulisic, Mckennie, Dest, and Jedi.
Talented players not getting playtime: Gio, Musah (more recently than earlier this season), and Weah.
Gregg has us ranked as, what, the 13th best country in the world according to fifa? Well, when you factor in the playing time at club, it’s clear he’s doing more with less.
So, in short, we have our most talented roster, top to bottom, of all time. However, it doesn’t mean much when that talent isn’t really developing at club.
Balo committed when Berhalter was in limbo
Dest had been representing the US since he was 17ish
Musah knew he had no chance in hell of making England's squad before 2030
Pepi MIGHT be the only true dual nat that Berhalter actually recruited
I say all that to say in retrospect i think Berhalter gets a little too much credit for dual nat "recruitment"
"master debater"… Uhhuh… I see what you did there… 😆
It’s probably 60/40 coach/players
How do we break down a low block? For one, I would start our most capable player (Reyna) and let him do what he does best. The 2021 Nations League final vs Canada is a perfect example of this. Without Berhalter, we had no issue breaking down the low block.
We aren’t over hyped. I think, like all US teams, can perform better than the perceived skill in the team with the right coach and approach. For example, the USMNT under Bob Bradley at the Confed cup against the greatest national team roster of all time in Spain.
Players coming out in support of the coach is nothing new. It's a circling the wagons strategy to deal with the media. C'mon.
These players haven't played for anyone else lol they don't have a reference point to compare management by
Its like asking kids to imagine having a different parents
To blame under-performances explicitly on the players is to imply AC Milan, Juve, PSV, Fulham, etc. wouldn't destroy any USL or Jamaican Club in competition. That's just silly.
The vast majority of blame is clearly on the coach who failed in the swedish second division & whose dismissal has vastly improved every club he has coached for.
Can we chill with the ONE example of the England game???
Southgate is basically the British Berhalter
They neutralized one othet with their ineptitude and incompetence
The England match wasn't the chess match Berhalter apologists like to pretend it was
Also also proof of the exception never disproves the rule
It’s both honestly but the debate should be how much ? We have low standards and low expectations & high expectations. Coach is awful and organization. Hyped by players yes due to fan and organization.
Based on this dude's thinking, we don't even need a coach. He is wrong and naive on so many levels
Tac, I’ve been following your channel for 3/4 years now. Your content continues to get better and better! I love the videos you make and the interviews you’ve done. I don’t always agree but I appreciate the videos always. Keep it up brotha
using the wolves-city game as a comparable example is … hilarious. wolves is one of the better teams outside of the top five and city has farmed goals against a motley of low blocks throughout the season, league and ucl.
Teams always reflect theur coaching when they play
I can tell this dude has never been a serious athlete
Good conversation/debate, need more of these!
Berhalter is a known known at this point
His ceiling has been established
Tell me you don’t watch serie A football and pulisic every week without telling me. Hey everyone’s got their opinions and that’s what we’re here for. But there have only been two teams to try and play end to end football wgaisnt them. Intet, and fiorentia. And bologna. And how many GA does puli have 22, all while dribbling in tight spaces on his “weaker”
Foot. And two games he’s played the ten. 2 goals and an assist. I think what you’re missing is that all
We do is cross but the 9 apart from haji that he chooses now has been balogun. And he is terrible in the air and needs a 10 like gio pulisic to thread him the ball. But ggg plays an outside to in style. It’s literally always been that way until he saw BJ win the nations league with gio at the 10.
also reyna said himself he was out of the forest matches for two weeks due to illness, not injury, and played over 150 minutes in a handful of days. but that doesn't fit the narrative i guess
dual national recruitment when berhalter hasn't been responsible for over half of the players, joe wants an SD for a coach
Everyone can have there own thoughts, but this guy Joe just doesn’t seem to educated on soccer. Gives me the vibes of someone just 1 or 2 years ago started following and now knows it all.
JOE U DO NOT KNOW BALL PLZ STFU
Gregg badd
