The Mirror’s Darren Lewis shares his thoughts after West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips was filmed swearing at fans after the club’s 4-3 defeat at Newcastle.
Phillips made the offensive gesture in response to abuse while boarding the team bus at St James’ Park.

West Ham deserve better.. simple.
I am a staunch WH supporter, and was gutted by yesterday's result. But, if you are a real fan, you don't treat your players that way….

Poor journalism as always, why gaslight when the video is in the public domain. The crowd only chanted “get out of our club” after the finger was shown in response to 1 guy shouting useless. Children were there, so these journos think that is acceptable?

The fans have finally reacted to him, in person, he reacts back – he reacted as so, but it shows his heart isn't in it.
It's a negative move for parties and West Ham fans are fed up.
The presenter states abuse, it was actually quite mild albeit disgruntled fans expressing fair criticism towards a player whom doesn't really wanna be there.
In fact by Phillips reacting proves he isn't precious but why do presenters, ex players and some pundits expect a big AHHH POOR PLAYERS, from the public… Is it part of an extended health care package?
If it was serious abuse and then make a fuss..

Football fans do have a right to voice their opinions. Unfortunately its both a societal issue and sometimes a player's personal issue as well.
Nevertheless Philips has only set himself up for more hate and criticism from the West Ham fans, they have a right to be angry and will not accept players who drop below the work efforts and do not give all their energy on the pitch. Should not be playing for England either as he has not done enough at club level to warrant call ups and tournament representation.

Yeah, I agree with you. It's calm. I'm not offended. I don't think many of us are tbh. You guys are the ones making a story out of it. He wasn't abused. He was called useless. It's one-for-one. The fans called him useless, and he flipped them off. Just so happened to be caught on camera. He needs to apologize for the fact that the kids were there and move on. If he doesn't apologize, he doesn't play. Simple. He's an employee of the club, we all make mistakes. Apologize for the fact that the kids were there and move on. It's down to him; you either tap into the good honest lad from Leeds that we all see, or you tap into the (and this is an honest assessment) the honestly overpaid and slightly egotistical person you become from being at City. I personally find the 1st one a better version of you. Think it's a bit of a reality check for you mate, which is fine. At the end of the day, Kalvin, we are a working-class club just like Leeds, we have some thick fans, we have some smart ones, we have some empathetic fans, we have some less empathetic ones. Apologize for the fact that you did as it was in front of kids and you can try and kick on again. Simple.
