Welcome to The Athletic FC’s YouTube channel, where best-in-class journalism meets video.
In this episode, we look at why Arsenal’s Ben White has become such a divisive figure of late – comparing how the right back is perceived inside and outside of the North London club.
In the words of his captain Martin Odegaard: ““When you look at him from the outside, you might think that he’s someone who doesn’t care too much…But he’s one of the guys who cares the most — about the team, about his team-mates.”

He didn't WATCH a James at home, I believe he comes from a more rugby oriented family. Doesn't mean he didn't care at all, not like he's just in it for the money as some believe, he still loves actually playing
Didn’t answer why he made himself unavailable though? Bad short
TONS of professional footballers don’t watch football. How was this ever a story?
Not the first player to decide not to play and not the last.
Southgate out.
He's that guy who acts stoic and tough but deep down cares about the things/people closest to him the most. A typical Kimi Raikkonen
My thoughts on this is that ben should be left alone cos he has his reasons. Man needs to spend time with his family. There's more to life than football. We should respect his decisions n move on
Screenshot this he will become a fantastic manager
Ben seems like a top bloke, he's good at football, he can choose to go or not, he's an adult
he said he doesn't watch football BECAUSE HE WAS ALWAYS WANTING TO PLAY IT. ffs.
You try to turn the shaolin hands into a scholars cradle, but I can see it takes all your effort
As a united fan I wish arsenal win against bayern
There's no mystery. He just doesn't suffer fools.
Gets pegged daily
Love benno for this! Class
Of course he doesn't watch football and made himself unavailable for England.
Why would a Scottish scrum-half playing for Toulon be interested in any of those?
Lol, you can't play though a hamstring injury
Ben white is somewhat of a mystery (outside of Arsenal).
Cue 1 minute about how he's a strong willed, competitive, dedicated, adaptable player and person who does not shy away from hardship.
The only "mystery" is why Southgate is trying to paint him as a weak willed brat for standing up for himself, and not willing to accept bad treatment from an assistant coach. Start Steve Holland at right back, there, problem solved.
Honestly, can not care less about international football anyway.
Was treated like rubbish before. Don’t blame him not to go again
Benjamin is the most consistent RB in England. And I hope Calvin Phillips and Henderson lover – Southgate will leave the national team ASAP
As a united fan, I fully understand club over country.

Ben White moves at his own pace, always
He better served playing for Nigeria than England.
Other than just offering chess lessons, apparently Hikaru has also sponsored Andy through some of his tournaments (a fact Hikaru refused to mention in his recap).
Wishing GM Woodward all the best in his VERY promising career.
Have you left Football Daily?
He knows Southgate would rather play an injured Reece James over him, so why even bother?
Remember when the media and rival fans mocked Arsenal for the transfer when United, Chelsea, and Liverpool got Varane, Fofana, and Konate?
Not because you're a footballer means you're obsessed with football. He plays over 50 games a year. That's enough football 😂
England are terrible, hell learn nothing from Southgate, hes made the right decision to stick to club football
Lost all respect for him after turning down his country. I’ve lost the same respect for those who once played for irelands youth team just to join the English team. Turning your back on your country is a big no go.
