Australia coach Graham Arnold said Argentina brought out the best in his side, a day before their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.Australia beat Argentina in the Tokyo Olympics.

Graham Arnold’s side secured their passage to the knockout stages courtesy of Mathew Leckie’s goal in a 1-0 victory over Denmark on Wednesday.

In doing so, the ‘Socceroos’ matched the achievement of Guus Hiddink’s 2006 Australia side, who reached the last 16 in Germany before they lost late on to Italy, and they have never advanced to the World Cup quarter-final phase.

Arnold’s unfancied Australia defied expectations to finish second in Group D behind defending world champions France – and were only behind ‘Les Bleus’ on goal difference – after winning two of their three fixtures versus North African side Tunisia and then against European Championship semi-finalists Denmark.
