Not many people know Boro Primorac there in the background but his story is remarkable. His team Valenciennes had three players who were bought off by Marseille to go easy against Marseille in 1993, which is what Marseille and their president Bernard Tapie did back then to win titles in France, cheat by buying off opposition players, including Wenger’s at Monaco. Boro Primorac himself was offered money by Tapie to throw the match but refused.

There were whistleblowers inside Valenciennes as the case became open, and it’s interesting that Wenger, a chief victim of the Marseille cartel, ended up asking Boro Primorac to join him for the rest of his career. Wenger probably thought Boro would have had a hard time finding jobs for the rest of his career because he was (by no fault of his own) involved in the Marseille-Valenciennes affair as being manager of the opposition team, and probably why Boro remained loyal to Wenger all his life.

Even though Wenger’s lack of replenishment of his backstaff was frustrating and one of his downfalls, his background story with Boro Primorac carried its own weight.

I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that these legendary players couldn’t manage to win the CHL.
