Jose hinted many times that he wanted the job, he had many meetings with Sir Alex in the last 2 years of his career, they were pictured together many times, he admired him very much, and I think Sir Alex hurt him by going for Moyes. Mourinho is getting his revenge, he will make Chelsea champions for the next decade and United will regret not getting him when they had the chance.
