후반 99분 왼쪽에서 설영우가 헤더로 넘겨준 볼을 조규성이 골대앞에서 헤딩으로 극적인 골을 넣어 연장전까지 갔고, 연장전 무승부로 승부차기까지 갔다. 골키퍼 조현우의 선방으로 2골을 막아내어 4:2로 승리, 8강에 올랐다. 조규성의 선방이었는 데 조규성은 골대 앞에서 제공권 싸움에서 이겼고, 그 동안 폼이 안좋아 비난을 많이 받았는 데 이 1골로 조현우와 함께 대한민국이 8강에 오르는 데 큰 기여를 했다. 수비에서 김민재의 철벽수비는 빛을 보았고, 손흥민, 이강인, 황희찬의 기량이 최대로 발휘되지 못한 면은 아쉬운 부분이다. 다행히 조규성을 선발로 안쓰고 후반전 65분 골대앞에서 제공권 싸움으로 교체 투입 클린스만감독의 변화된 전술은 고무적이었다. 8강에서는 손흥민과 이강인, 황희찬이 자기 기량 뽐낼 수 있는 전술을 만들어 내길 기대한다.
