  1. Playing Ferreira the most over the last few years and him being terrible if part of the reason Greg should leave. Wasting time with him and not bringing in actual players that can help the team at the number 9 is insane to me. Daryl dike, Jordan pefok and pepi should’ve had more time with this team .

  2. Wow, I don't get all these excuses for Greg, dude gets outcoached consistently and gets bailed out by talent and people still want this guy to stay, unbelievable

  3. I remember Berhalter talking about some players "get ahead of themselves going to European teams too early". He should heed himself. His level where he still could find some success is the MLS. Maybe Turkey… or Albania.

  4. Berhalter was coach when

    – USA beat mexico in back-2-back finals in 2021

    – We drew against England at the 2022 WC. This is a legendary result.

    – We got out of the group at the 2022 WC, consisting of the #5,#16,#19,#20 teams in the world according to FIFA, that is a very tough group

    – We put in a respectable performance against NED, a team that every non-biased pundit pick NED to win.

  5. The problem is not who is coaching the national team. The problem is that with 30 million people playing football in America the youth system isn't producing any high-level talent.
I you look at France (1.8 million), The Netherlands (1 million) or Portugal (547 000) and the amount of High and Elite level players they develop. If America doesn't fix that issue, they can forget building a football legacy.

  6. The US struggled to score goals in qualifying and they were awful in Qatar. Even with guys like Pefok and Pepi being left behind, I truly don't know if their presence would have made a difference.

Berhalter is a run-of-the-mill coach, if your sights are set higher as a Federation…which they should be with the youth and players America has in Europe right now…Berhalter isn't going to maximize it. Who is? I dunno, but not him.

  7. Juls: "It was a step too high for them."

Was it, or did 3G's decisions and trust compromise the squad? He starts with a guy in Ferreira who never saw any action in this WC before the match against the Netherlands, and a lot of the guys who did start that match played excessively in the three prior WC matches that the US played and in humid conditions. With a 26-man roster, 3G maybe gave 60% of the players he had available to him any game time, which I find to be a glaring mistake in such conditions. He placed too much trust in what appeared to be already-taxed players to come out of the Netherlands match with a win and not enough trust in his substitutes in any of the US's four WC matches. What's the point in bringing 26 players to the tournament when so few of them will play, and you're late in every match in bringing on fresh legs to bring energy to the team?

If the USSF had hopes that a coach with no national team experience before his appointment could muster a miraculous run in this WC, they were as naive as 3G was in doubling down on his tactics when the evidence was clear those tactics weren't working.

  8. Spoiler… meanwhile, it's looking like the usual suspects in the rd of 8… how exciting.

So Berhalter. He's gotten acres and acres of criticism, often rightly so. But it's over, and he did get a lot of things right too. Compared to 2014 too, beyond just the play – there was more harmony in the group. And in the rd of 16, there was more belief vs. Netherlands whereas vs Belgium, there was little. I mean compare the games – in 2014 it was defend at all cost and still get sliced up and thank heavens for Tim Howard. In 2022, the Netherlands were still always the better side but the USA, while naive, were FAR braver and showed it's growth.

So for Berhalter – I hope he returns to club football. I think he can be a better manager and maybe even an outstanding one. But he needs much more day to day experience. And I think that is what he probably wants – to be on the field every day. What is great is he CAN adapt and learn but usually it's a little longer now but he's also learning as a manager as well. So for the USA in 2026, with the current group and where they are, it might take more experience and tactical ability from a manager to push them further. But that is just my .02. I'm not totally on the 'everything is GGG fault' bandwagon. So maybe move on but hopefully leave it in very good terms so that if something doesn't work out so well, he knows the players and can easily step in if there is an emergency.

  9. it is hard to find excuse for canada and usa if they under perform they got best training grounds gyms nutritionist everything that this sport needs maybe they need more managers with knowledge

  10. Where I disagree most with Gab here is that since 2002, the US hasn't always done great making progress with the same manager after the Cup. Arena was terrific after Sampson in 1998 – they even made a FIFA semi in 99 (say what you will) and he did wonderful bringing in Donovan and Beasley among others – and letting Mathis be Mathis. It took guts to start Friedel too. But in 2006, it was a different story. Bob Bradley did ok in 2010 but some thought they should have done better vs Ghana (I don't… they had better players). They kept him for a bit but the US was in love with Klinsmann so it didn't take much right after for them to ax him – harshly, I might add. And finally JK… who they kept after 2014 but… you know the story. ;). So they need to be careful here…

  11. van Gaal coached circles around Gregg. He did a job for the US recovering from the disaster of '18 and getting us qualified but it's time to move on. His tactics and lineup decisions were pretty terrible overall.

  12. Gregg's done a fine job with the US but that doesn't mean he should continue on. His bias towards certain players, and rigid tactics will hurt this team after a while. A new cycle needs everyone feeling like they have a new manager to impress and a fair chance.

  13. I see him going back to mls and being a star there. I don't know how he will handle the pressure fans and the board of a top 5 league club puts on their coaches.
