Can someone please explain to me why Romania – a force and world class team in handball , winning gold medals left and right during the 1960s , 1970s , 1980s – basically has been completely absent for almost three consecutive decades (since 1997) in major tournaments ( IOC , IHF , EHF ) until this Euro 2024 ( with unremarkable exceptions in IHF WC 2009 & 2011 ) ???
In all of world team sports this must be kind of unique.
Does it have to do with Ceaușescu and the brutality / aftermath of his regime?
The large exodus of people out of Romania since the fall of the Iron Curtain?
