Out of Europe and falling down the Premier League, Newcastle United’s season is in serious danger of falling apart. But as they continue to grow as a football club in the long term, Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips could offer them some solutions in the short term.

  1. That crumple transition at the start was clean AF. As for the analysis, I'm right with you. I was in the Leazes for the Forest shambles and the amount of space they had on the break was ridiculous. Someone who can shield the defense is a must to cope with that.

  2. Other options to Phillips Adam? I don't see many out there that would be achievable in a Jan window? Also I do think the RW problem needs resolving and then there's the small issue of Dubravka looking lost as well. Thoughts?

  3. They’ve got similar issues to United, reliant on intensity, but getting murdered by injuries and in need of some reinforcements.

But I honestly think long term, Eddie Howe isn’t the guy. He was the guy to lead them as a gritty underdog team. It’s the same Bournemouth tactics but with better players.

But now they’re being played against like they’re a top team, and those underdog tactics don’t work so well, and you’re seeing late stage Bournemouth where people know what to expect and have learned, the injuries don’t help because you end up not able to play as well as you could, but the tactics on show are not sustainable for a team still in transition.

  4. Unfortunately there’s a large number of fans that think we’re already a top team and don’t expect a drop in form because we’ve had one good season.
We did well last year because the lads worked there b@llox off as a team and pressed non stop, creating most of our goals from pressing the opposition into mistakes. When we can no longer do that the lesser quality and ability of the players we still have from the Ashley era becomes much more apparent. We just haven’t got the players (yet) to be able to control matches like Man City, Arsenal etc.

  5. The major problem is that Trippier is 32 and Schar is 31 and both play on the same side. Schar is nororious for being very lazy when directly attacked both aerially or via strength based play. And Trippier has just aged out of being able to track back.

Alot of their goals are leaking because these two players are put in bad positions after Bruno has commited to the attack. Kalvin Phillips solves nothing. Because at the end of the day Trippier needs to move into the 6 role, and Bruno needs to move forward. They also need to go get a Roylles-Royce CB to replace Schlar who's contract is up this offseason.

Phillips is just another Longstaff, but older and overpaid. They need to get the team back to solid.

  6. Phillips isn't a box to box midfielder, as a Leeds fan I can assure you of that. If teams are sitting back then what he can do is switch and dictate play. This kind of role got him the nickname of the Yorkshire Pirlo. If he's been pressed, and you have the ball, he's not great at that either. He gets in to the routine of playing short sideways passes.

Defending…. He's great, he reads the game, get's stuck in and marshalls that zone in front of the back 2 as good as anybody in the Prem. He'd be a good buy for Newcastle and Newcastle need a proper defensive midfielder and Phillips is probably your best option.

On top of that, he's decent in the air, good at fee kicks and got a good shot on him. He's a nice lad too and would be good in and around the dressing room.

  7. I'm a Newcastle fan, and I've been saying "They're tired" this whole run. I've always considered the human aspect of things. If anyone has played, they know Anyone would be gassed if they played our way for 90 minutes, 3 games a week. With that said, I hope January works for us. Not only to get some quality in but to add some depth too
