I think you are wrong about Mason Mounts passing range. Exhibit 1 being his 40 yard assist for the winning goal in the ECL final for Chelsea v City. ETH knows Mounts game better than us. The question is whether his entire game will ever be the same after 18 months of continual injuries. Taking a £55m risk on that question is a result of ETH trusting his memory more than our recruitment department.
Our chances of making the top four will improve massively if we get Martinez back at the same level as last season when he wasn’t just our best defender but our best breaker of the opposition high press with long and accurate passes. I say if because metatarsal injuries can leave players a yard slower and Martinez can’t afford to lose that yard but if he can regain last years form he will transform our defence and our ability to retain possession.
