Moving from a double pivot to a single has helped a lot.
It all actually began when Marco Silva decided to start Tom Cairney alongside Palhinha. TC has a much better ball retention and ball control than the likes of Reed or Lukic who would've been Palhinha's customary pairings. In saying this though, TC/Palhinha only really works in matches where we have the majority of possession. In games where we're expected to have less possession, Reed/Palhinha is the better pairing.
