Japan scored a controversial winner against Spain to knock Germany out of the World Cup, with some questioning whether Kaoru Mitoma’s cutback had crossed the byline.

Ao Tanaka completed a stunning turnaround from a Kaoru Mitoma cut-back which initially appeared to have gone out of play. A lengthy VAR check followed the goal, but it sensationally ruled in favour of Japan, the full curvature of the ball not deemed to have crossed the line.

Japan’s victory meant they finished top of Group E, with Spain second and Germany, who beat Costa Rica 4-2 in a thriller, sent packing.

  1. No it was out of play but while var team say it is you got to take there word for it its a form of cheating bet they admit in 15 to 20 years time they were wrong there killing our football

  2. It's controversial only because it was to Japan's favor. If it was to the favor of Germany (or any country) against Japan, it would not be as controversial. Japan would have accepted the decision without any high-intensity reaction because it's japan! Courteous, disciplined, humble, polite, talented. LET'S GO JAPAN!!! 🇯🇵

  3. FIRST,

we only have one REFEREE that made the decision.

AFTER that, things get better and REFEREE can consult with his 2 LINESMEN too now.

And if the LINESMEN is much nearer to the incident than the REFEREE and is SURE what exactly happen, the referee will usually follow him too !

And NOW, we have VAR :

If there is STILL a dispute among PLAYERS regarding IMPORTANT situation, then the referee will get the VAR TEAM to FINALIZE the decision.

The VAR TEAM usually consisting of 3 or 4 NEUTRAL staffs, will then thoroughly check the VIDEOS from EVERY AVAILABLE ANGLE as QUICKLY as possible ( because time is PRECIOUS )

And give the FINAL DECISION to the referee for the refeee to follow through.

So let us stop this bullshits once and for all and get on with this 2022 World Cup !

  4. The ball was out. The argument about the angle is absurd. If no part of the ball touches the line the ball is out. From above or from a vertical perspective it is irrelevant how it looks.

  5. Listen, it is plain DISHONEST to suggest that the goal should not have stood because ALL THE PHOTOS the media have shown are either from the field looking at the stand or from the rear side. The angle of the photos shown are ALWAYS BEHIND the ball so of course the ball looks like it has passed the line. If you look at the photo the media most commonly show, the one from the rear side, you can clearly see by the angle of the goal post that again the photo is from BEHIND. If you were to show a photo or a paused image from the footage where the goal post would be perfectly aligned with the touch line, then we would all clearly see that the football has not passed the touch line entirely and therefore the pass leading to the goal is perfectly valid. Look at the angle of the photo, it is just stupid. The ONLY VALID angle to support one claim or the other is from the side or the top, you have to be perfectly aligned with the touch line. The Japanese goal is 100% VALID. There is not a doubt about it and it is actually the Germans who complain about it more than the Spanish. If you can see the corner of the Spanish goal post as we clearly do, your angle is wrong therefore it gives you the optical illusion that the ball is out. That angle you show at 0:09 is even more stupid, it is far back so of course the ball looks behind. JAPAN goes through, they deserve it for beating both Germany and Spain.

  6. I generally don't watch football because most fans are drunk raving idiots who don't understand the rules of the game. People raving on about how some angles show some green just proves it further that it's a piss foam party for most fans, rather than an intellectual conversation about how rules work.
