Eric García has officially signed for Barcelona, completing a free transfer from Manchester City, just one day after Sergio Agüero was announced as a new Barça player. The young defender will be presented in Barcelona on Tuesday, alongside president Joan Laporta. Garcia signs a five-year-deal at Barça and will join team-mate Agüero at the club from next season.

Is Garcia better than Lenglet? I never saw him play…
The only rumoured signing I’m actually happy with. I also believe that even if we had money we would have signed Garcia. Can’t say the same for Aguero or Wijnaldum. All these other rumoured signings don’t make sense. We go through a “transitional” season to transition from older players to young players. With Aguero and Wijnaldum we are reverting back to what we were doing before. Doesn’t make any sense because at least now there is potential for the young players to improve. These older guys are only getting worse and time goes on. We need to keep strengthening that backline and continue to develop younger players. That was the whole point of last season and it was something that we should have done after the Liverpool loss.

This does nothing to solve our defensive issues. Garcia is good on the ball and good going forward. In defense, he lacks pace, physicality and is not positionally sound enough to have those deficiencies. So, stylistically, yes, you would want someone like him paired with Araujo, because Barca like to play out from the back and Araujo is more of a pure defender. However, in practice, this will not solve anything. Could Garcia develop into a good defender? Yes. However, that will take a couple of years at least.
