Unfortunately the acquisition of Mason Mount is a reflection of the failure of the evaluation process undertaken by Ten Hag, Arnold and Murtough from last season. Not only about Mount but also Onana and Hojlund. I suspect that Mount was brought in to play a certain type of football as his attributes appear to be suited to a pressing, possession type of football. His attributes serves him best as a number 10 or playing along side another 8. He has a good work rate and is decent in other skilled areas.
He , Onana and Hojlund were brought in to a team that the Manager believed could play a certain way only to discover that was not the case. Pressing up high by United leaves a Hugh gap in the mid field and leaves and older Casemiro exposed and alone to cover too much space. Playing out from the back for which the new GK was purposely obtain, is ineffective when team don’t press you and when the players that are suppose to be passed too, aren’t comfortable and efficient on the ball and finally, relying on a 20 year old with potential with no proven track record to solve your lack of goals was always going to be a mistake.
Mount is a decent player but it is no surprise what has transpired at United with him and the other transfers. That speaks to Ten Hag for poor planning and the recently departed Arnold and soon to be departed Murtough for their role in allowing this to happen.
Ten Hag did a masterful job last year but instead of building on a foundation he started, he decided to change and it’s come back to bite him. He got himself in this mess, it will be interesting to see how and if he can extricate himself and the team. This season will tell if Ten Hag has the Managerial and coaching chops to overcome his own mistakes

I would use Mason on RW in a 433 setting

Mount needs time to gel with other team mates plus he can score goals.But with to many misfits we can't put a a aggressive attacking performance together.

Mount hadn't kicked a football since Feb so it's easy to see why he had the slow start that he had. He has been lively in bursts and works hard when he has been given the chance. Dysfunction in midfield and defense has probably meant ETH has been hesitant to put Mount out as he is a much more offensive Eriksen. Without phase 1 build up or midfield control, Mount has been rendered ineffective. Same argument for Amrabat in that it feels like ETH is waiting for his defense to stay intact before risking playing his signings together in preferred system. He's reverted to this pragmatic approach in the mean time and certain players are struggling to get in that we thought would play. Onana is another one suffering to an extent as we are only using him to launch rather than what we seemed to buy him for which is build up.
