Gareth Southgate’s press conference announcing his latest England squad and why he left out Raheem Sterling and Eddie Nketiah.

TIMESTAMPS

00:00 – Bobby Charlton’s funeral – our greatest ever player, hopefully we can celebrate his life at Wembley

01:40 – No Sterling for fifth consecutive squad? The door is 100% open for Raheem and other players, the team is playing really well so who do we drop?

02:25 – Has your relationship broken down with Sterling? No, who would I leave out to put him in? He wasn’t available in March or June and we’ve stuck with the same group

04:12 – Injury worries a difficulty? Some of those we could lose one today, one tomorrow, we don’t really know, can’t be certain everyone in the squad will remain, Callum Wilson biggest doubt but confident about others

05:20 – No Nketiah and striker competition? I said to Eddie we see Callum and Ollie slightly ahead of him

06:13 – No Stones an opportunity for others? We’ve had a big turnover in the squad, really disappointed for John and he’s having a difficult time injury wise but gives other people an opportunity, need to know more about some of them

07:04 – I was hoping to call Reece James up but doesn’t feel he’s quite ready which I understand, maybe not as many experienced options in that position

08:07 – Kalvin Phillips said he needs to be playing games? For any player that’s not playing football it’s about their career, England is a consequence of club and you want fulfilment but he’s up against world class players

09:40 – Raheem made himself unavailable before, is that a message? No not looking to send a message, lots of competition in that area

11:00 – Have you spoken to Rashford? He knows we love him, he’s been exceptional in last three starts for us, nothing to discuss

11:45 – What happens at Rashford’s club is nothing to do with me

12:00 – Rashford red card and VAR? I think it’s a red card because the action takes him into a collision but everyone knows he’s trying to protect the ball, really unfortunate

12:45 – I was bored watching the Spurs v Chelsea game! It just kept stopping, what about the fans? It’s sucking the enjoyment out of goals, ball in play time was incredibly low

13:35 – Is Ben White available for selection? I assume so, he’s been very solid for Arsenal, different profile of full-back

14:08 – No other issues apart from football with him? No, lots of strength in that position

  1. trying too hard to make an issue out of Sterling. don't see why his omission is such a problem for sky sports.
If anything Gordon probably deserves a call up
