Danny Murphy recommended to the Liverpool manager to place Cody Gakpo on the bench.
Danny Murphy, a pundit on TalkSPORT, has recommended that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp consider benching Cody Gakpo. Despite Liverpool’s strong start to the season, where they currently hold the fourth position in the league table, trailing Manchester City by just one point and Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur by three points, Murphy believes that a different Liverpool player should be given the starting role instead of Gakpo, who has been performing well.
Danny Murphy Recommends That Liverpool’s Standout Player, Cody Gakpo, Should Be Rested.
Liverpool secured Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a £35 million deal in January. This Dutch player has left a significant impression, as Jurgen Klopp has deployed him in various roles, including midfield, on the wings, and even as a center-forward.
Gakpo has made seven appearances in the Premier League this season, primarily as a striker, a role that Danny Murphy doesn’t seem to favor. Murphy has been insistent that Darwin Nunez should be in the starting lineup and has stated that the Uruguayan could score 20 goals in a season if given more opportunities.
Furthermore, Murphy has proposed that Gakpo should be sidelined because opposing defenders would rather face him than a player like Nunez. He stated on talkSPORT, “Liverpool has strong options in their attacking positions. When facing the top teams, I’d have Nunez in the center with Diaz and Salah on the flanks, not Gakpo, even though I admire Gakpo. I always consider it this way – if you’re a center-back for Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, or Arsenal, and you see Liverpool’s lineup, and you have to choose between Gakpo and Nunez, Nunez (worries me more).”
Gakpo’s Versatility Extends To Playing In Midfield.
Liverpool’s optimal attacking trio consists of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah. Salah is the established right flank starter, and Diaz has shown his brilliance this season. Despite Nunez’s limited starts in the league this season, he poses a significant challenge for opposing defenders, making him a valuable asset.
While Gakpo has started as a center-forward five times this season, he is equally capable of playing in midfield.
Liverpool’s upcoming match against Everton after the international break will be intriguing, as it remains to be seen if Gakpo will be in the starting lineup. If it were up to us, we would choose Nunez as the forward option.

Well, he is injured, so there really isn't much of a choice.
