As part of the Club’s Black History Month celebrations, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji sit down to consider their journeys to this point.

The defenders were both born in Europe to African fathers and European mothers. Ake’s father was from Ivory Coast and his mother is Dutch while Akanji was born to a Swiss mother and a Nigerian father.

Ake is a Dutch international, born in The Hague in the Netherlands, while Akanji plays for Switzerland – where he was born more than 28 years ago in a town called Neftenbach.

The pair have played for some of Europe’s biggest clubs – including Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and FC Basel – before arriving at City.

Now they’re team-mates and Treble winners as part of Pep Guardiola’s wildly successful City squad.

Here they learn more about each other’s routes to the Etihad Stadium as one of our many pieces that will mark Black History Month, designed to recognise and honour the achievements of Black people across society, throughout October.

  1. Something I'm happy about watching this, that these two fantastic players are not wasting their potentials playing for the Nigerian national team, same with Bukayo Saka. We don't care about players' welfare here male or female team, so good for them honestly.

  2. Ketika anda lawan Arsenal pertandingan yang membosankan anda tunjukan kepada kami, kami kecewa, dan foden harus pergi dia bermain sangat buruk

  3. Where does City get these level headed young men. So much spotlight on them yet so reserved, so calm, so matured, so down to earth they are just pure gems. All of them, the entire team! It's like they were raised by the same parents.
