Jurgen Klopp explains Wataru Endo’s limited 91-minute Liverpool appearance.

The addition of the Japanese international midfielder to the Anfield squad during the summer transfer window came as a surprise. His arrival was unexpected, as a deal was finalized with Bundesliga side Stuttgart that caught many off guard.
Endo is facing tough competition for a spot in Liverpool’s midfield, which has resulted in him starting only two games in both the Premier League and Europa League. Regular playing time in the English top-flight has been hard to come by.
Klopp has suggested that Endo’s friendly and polite demeanor may have initially held him back when he first arrived in Merseyside. The German coach mentioned when asked about the Japanese star’s performance with Liverpool, “He needs to adapt to the environment here. Wataru is a great guy, very calm and polite, and maybe that cost him in the first two weeks. But he’s making progress now. He’s not in his 30s, looking to push people aside to get into the team, but he’s improving every day.”
“He will contribute significantly, play matches, and start games, among other things. It’s all positive. He has already played three or four games for us in a very short time, and that’s what matters. This is not a short-term project. Wataru is a crucial part of the squad, and I’m delighted to have him.”
Endo did make a cameo appearance for Liverpool in their recent 3-1 victory over West Ham, coming off the bench in the 88th minute. However, he is finding it difficult to displace players like Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister from Klopp’s plans.

  1. I'm afraid his football career will go the same way as Takumi Minamino. He should have stayed on at Stuttgart where he's a key member of the team and played regularly. It's hard for Asian players to fit in because of their cultural background. Klopp will only use him as a squad player, as he's not among the first choice. I hope I'll be proven wrong!
