Manchester United could get exactly what they need in the transfer window with a shrewd Β£17 million signing. Mehdi Taremi could provide Manchester United with what Erik ten Hag hoped he would get from Wout Weghorst.
When Manchester United signed Wout Weghorst, there was a rationale, but a lack of quality. The striker was a means to an end transfer but ultimately one that failed. The Dutchman did not find the net in a Premier League game and has now returned to Burnley.
The hope at Old Trafford was a high-profile, high-cost summer striker signing. A Harry Kane, a Victor Osimhen. But with Β£60 million already spent on Mason Mount and a new goalkeeper required, United and Erik Ten Hag find themselves in the same boat as they did in January. They need a centre forward but don’t have the money to buy a premium player. A “Weghorst 2.0” is required.
And with Mehdi Taremi, United have a player capable of being what they hoped Weghorst would be. The Porto striker has been a target for Everton and Newcastle United and is open to a move to the Premier League. He may not be a star name, but he has an impressive goal-scoring record in Portugal and caught the eye at the World Cup for Iran. In fact, he scored twice against England and has a goal ratio of better than one goal every two games throughout his career. Since joining Porto, he has excelled both domestically and in Europe, scoring a stunning overhead kick against Chelsea in the 2021 Champions League quarter-final.
He certainly knows where the net is, and his profile would suit United as a goal-getter and a focal point capable of involving other players. His contract expires next summer, and although he’s not a long-term solution at 30, he’s more than capable of making a valuable addition who could thrive in England and for United. Taremi could be the player that Ten Hag hoped Weghorst would be. And for a cut-price fee of Β£17 million, it could be money well spent.
