Diego Godín has called an end to his playing days after 20 years in professional football. The man born in the modest city of Rosario, developed from a makeshift defender into one of the most feared centre-backs on the planet.
Godín made his debut for Cerro. El Faraón established himself as a promising defender, which eventually earned him a move to Nacional. He only needed one season for the Uruguayan giants to convince European suitors of his ability. Godín was snapped up by Villarreal in 2007, embarking on a European journey which would see him evolve into one of the best defenders in the world. At El Submarino Amarillo, Godín matured as a player and got acquainted with the elite of European football. Meanwhile, he had already debuted for Uruguay and was turning into a regular for La Celeste boss Óscar Tabárez. During the 2010 World Cup, Godín proved himself on the world stage as he featured 5 times in Uruguay’s impressive run to the semi-final. His exploits in South Africa, along with those for Villarreal, prompted Atlético Madrid into signing the young defender. In the red and white of Atléti, Diego Godín felt at home. In a 9-year spell for the Rojiblancos, the Charrúa defender lived the most glorious days of his career. Under the guidance of Diego Simeone, Godín became the defensive leader of a team which was widely regarded as the best defensive side in Europe. Godín won a total of 8 trophies with Atléti, including the unforgettable La Liga title in 2014. In 2019, Godín and Atlético parted ways. After 12 years in Spain, Godín moved to Italy where he played for Inter and Cagliari before returning to South America. His spells in Italy did not live up to expectations and neither would his next two adventures for Atlético Mineiro and Vélez Sarsfield. Age had unfortunately caught up with Godín, who became a shadow of the once great defender. On the 30th of July in 2023, Diego Godín played the final game of his career.
Diego Godín played a record-breaking 161 games for Uruguay, many of which as the captain. He won the 2011 Copa América, while also being part of 4 World Cup campaigns. In 2018, Godín was named in the World Cup Team of the Tournament. Godín scored 8 times for La Celeste, most notably against Italy during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and against Bolivia during a 2018 World Cup qualifier in La Paz.
