The USMNT will play in 2 tournament’s next summer-the Copa America at home and the Paris 2024 Olympics. How should Gregg Berhalter deconstruct the 2 rosters? Should there be overlap? Should guys like Folarin Balogun, Gio Reyna, Ricardo Pepi, Joe Scally and Yunus Musah, who are eligible for the Olympics, play for our Olympic team?

I break down how we could build the 2 rosters with zero overlap and speculate about how things might go.

  1. Re: Releasing young players for these tournaments like the Olympics, If coaches are smart they can look at Diego Luna whom Real Salt Lake let go to the U20, and since he has comeback he has been tearing it up in MLS.

  2. #1 Priority should be the Olympics Copa America Refs WILL screw out Canada or The US team if necessary to have a S.American country win it in the same way We or Mex always manage to win in our Tournament's

  3. Love your choices for both these tournaments. Unfortunately i have no faith that GGG well take any player pools that are remotely as interesting. I'm expecting the Yueil's, Roldan's, and Morris's to still be littering GGG's player call ups.

  4. Lennard Maloney is a real reach. Maybe he balls out over the next year, but right now, James Sands is much more likely for a backup 6.

  5. The Olympics needs as many good players as possible. The casual American will have no idea copa America is even on. They will be tuning into the Olympics. In terms of getting eyes on the sport an Olympic medal would do so much more than a copa America medal. That’s the reality of it. Even though copa America is the more prestigious tournament

  6. I don’t think Uruguay are DEFINITIVELY better than us. I think we can compete for that number 3 in the Americas behind only Argentina and Brazil.

  7. Copa is top priority. We need to build toward the WC. Copa America is the best way to do that. We need to put our best agains the best of South American and see where exactly we stand. I like both rosters. A team in Copa and give the youngsters a chance in the Olympics. Don't waste CP in the Olympics. Milan may not let him leave for the Olympics anyway.

  8. IMO, Hernandez-Foster at LB (though played solely DM for last 1.5 years), take out Tolkin. Mendez in for Maloney (never heard of or seen him) as best backup at 10 since Booth on Olympic roster. Llanez showed more in 3 games for men's team than Cowell has cumulatively, and we need to stop calling in attacking players with sub-par skills. Alvarado in for McGlynn or Paxton, easily. Maybe even Tessman in (though I saw very little of him).

  9. Olympic-Eligible Roster with no Over-Age Players:

    GK:
    Schulte (Columbus)
    Brady (Chicago)
    Slonina (Chelsea)

    LB:
    Tolkin (NYRB)
    Wiley (Atlanta)

    CB:
    Campbell (Montreal)
    Neal (LAG)
    Che (Brondby)
    Craig (Austin)

    RB:
    Reynolds (Roma)
    Harper (NYRB)

    DM/CM:
    Cardoso (Internacional)
    Vassilev (St. Louis)
    Richardson (Reims)
    Buck (New England)

    AM:
    Tillman (Bayern Munich)
    Gutierrez (Chicago)
    Aaronson (Frankfurt)
    Luna (RSL)

    W:
    Booth (Utrecht)
    Paredes (Wolfsburg)
    Cowell (San Jose)
    Koleosho (Burnley)

    ST:
    McGuire (Orlando)

  10. Personally I think this is a tournament where age does matter. The way the offense works, you’re also wasting valuable overage slots on 2 strikers. Here’s how I might have the Olympic team, 18 field players and 3 GK:

    GK – Slonina, Brady, Pulskamp

    FB – Tolkin, Gomez, Reynolds

CB – Brooks (O), MRob (O), TGray, Neal

MF – Cardoso, Tillman, Tessmann, Flach, PAaronson

W – Booth, Paredes, Cowell, Wiley

    S – Sargent (O), McGuire

With this lineup you would have 10 U23 players, 8 U20, and 3 overage.

Acosta 👎

  12. My rosters would be:

    Copa America:

    GKs:
    Turner
    Horvath
    Steffen

    CBs:
    Ream
    Richards
    CCV
    Brooks
    Trusty

    FBs:
    Dest
    Scally
    Robinson

    CMs:
    Adams
    Reyna
    Musah
    Mckennie
    De la Torre
    Booth

    FWs:
    Pulisic
    Weah
    Balogun
    Pepi
    Aaronson
    Tillman

  13. Wiley does not project as a copa America player right now. More likely that they bring a Dejuan Jones or a Yedlin

  14. 1:00 and Pete cannot deal with an ad hominem attack on Gregg, for no reason. I used to enjoy you. You’ve turned into a bitter, clout chaser. What a shame, there’s so few USMNT channels on YouTube, and you’ve turned into a hot take merchant.

  15. 27:25 wow, really can’t take you seriously. At the World Cup, Sargent started two matches. Jesus only started once…when Sarge was injured.

I guess we have the memory of a goldfish? Or, just here to spread lies/generate rage bait. Good for you, Pete!

  16. 32:39 lol, of every country tracked by FBREF, the US ranked THIRTIETH in minutes played in Europe. Behind: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Tell me again how we “Definitively” have better rosters when we are behind the likes of: Algeria, Mali, Ghana, and Sweden.

No actual research, just spouting off the cuff.
